Possible disadvantages

  • Rate Limits
The free tier is limited to 45 requests per minute, which might not be sufficient for high-volume applications.
  • Data Privacy
Storing and processing IP data can raise privacy concerns, especially in regions with strict data protection laws like GDPR in the EU.
  • Dependence on Third-Party Service
Relying on an external API means your application is dependent on their uptime and performance. Any downtime or issues with IP-API.com can impact your application.
  • Limited to IP Geolocation
The service is highly specialized for IP geolocation and does not provide broader functionalities that might be offered by more comprehensive data service providers.
  • No Batch Processing in Free Tier
Batch processing of multiple IP addresses in a single request is not available in the free tier, which can make handling large datasets more cumbersome.
  • Paid Plans Required for Advanced Features
To access higher rate limits and additional features, users must subscribe to paid plans, which can be a limitation for budget-conscious projects.
  • VPN Detection
Detects known and suspected commercial VPN exit IPs.
  • Proxy Detection
Identifies proxy infrastructure and suspicious proxy-related network signals.
  • Tor Detection
Checks IP addresses against frequently refreshed Tor exit-node data.

  • Multi-source Detection
Cross-references multiple VPN providers, threat-intelligence feeds and network datasets.
  • Active Network Probing

  • IPv4 and IPv6 Support
Both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses can be analyzed.
  • Signal Transparency
API responses expose the signals contributing to a detection instead of only providing a black-box result.
  • REST API
Provides developer-friendly JSON API endpoints for individual and bulk IP checks.
  • No Registration Required
The public API can be used without creating an account.
  • No API Key Required

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing IP-API.com and IPLogs.

What makes your product unique?

IPLogs's answer:

IPLogs combines multiple detection methods instead of relying on a single IP blacklist. It uses IP intelligence, TCP/IP and TLS fingerprinting, RTT analysis, active VPN protocol probing, client signals, and network checks to detect VPNs, proxies, Tor, and datacenter IPs. It also shows the individual signals behind every verdict, supports IPv4 and IPv6, and provides a free API without signup or an API key.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

IPLogs's answer:

IPLogs is free to use, requires no account or API key, and provides transparent detection results instead of only returning a black-box risk score. Developers can see which signals and sources triggered a detection, use both IPv4 and IPv6, perform bulk IP checks, and integrate the REST API directly into their applications.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

IPLogs's answer:

IPLogs is primarily built for developers, security teams, SaaS companies, fraud-prevention teams, website owners, and researchers who need to identify VPNs, proxies, Tor exits, datacenter IPs, or suspicious network traffic. Common use cases include fraud prevention, account security, abuse detection, geo-restriction enforcement, and network analysis.

What's the story behind your product?

IPLogs's answer:

IPLogs was created after finding that many VPN detection APIs marketed as free still required signup, imposed restrictive limits, hid detection signals behind paid plans, or produced unreliable results for services such as Apple Private Relay. The goal was to build a simple IP intelligence service that developers could use immediately without an account or API key, while also showing exactly why an IP was classified as suspicious. IPLogs launched in early 2026 and is developed by DigitalD.tech.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

IPLogs's answer:

Go, Next.js, Caddy, REST API, Hetzner Cloud

  • Hurl vs Postman: Git-Friendly API Testing With Proxy-Aware Egress (2026)
Free public geo APIs do not love datacenter traffic. My first instinct was to use ip-api.com — it’s the go-to for “what country is this IP” lookups and has a generous free tier. Hooked it up, ran the direct profile, got a clean response.... - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
  • I Built a Threat Intelligence Tool That Maps Malicious IPs in Real Time
The original version used http://ip-api.com — plain HTTP. On a cloud server, that traffic is unencrypted and could be intercepted and spoofed. I switched to https://ipinfo.io which supports HTTPS on the free tier. - Source: dev.to / 6 months ago
