About inputprobe DPI Test and PressReader.com

A browser can't ask a mouse for its DPI, so this test measures it: drag along an object whose size is fixed by international standard (a bankcard is 85.60 mm by ISO/IEC 7810), three passes, median plus spread. Accuracy bands are published from 51 runs on real hardware, and an alignment check...

Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

inputprobe DPI Test 5 features
PressReader.com 5 features
  • Measures, does not guess
A browser cannot ask a mouse for its DPI, so this measures it: you drag the mouse along a reference object of known size and it counts the movement the mouse actually reports over that distance.
  • Standard physical references
Measure against a bank card, whose long edge is 85.60 mm by ISO/IEC 7810, or A4 or US Letter paper at 297 mm and 279.4 mm. The reference is an international standard, so no ruler is involved.
  • Three passes, median and spread
You get the median of three passes plus the spread between them. Passes landing within a percent or two mean the measurement was repeatable; a wide spread means something interfered, and the tool says so.
  • Refuses rather than guesses
When the three passes disagree, no DPI figure is reported. An honest refusal is more useful than a confident wrong number, and the page explains what to change before trying again.
  • Free, local, nothing uploaded
Free and runs entirely in your browser. No account, no signup, no install, and nothing about the measurement leaves your machine.
  • Extensive Content Library
PressReader offers access to thousands of newspapers and magazines from over 100 countries in more than 60 languages, making it one of the largest digital newsstands available. Users can explore a vast range of local and international publications in one place.
  • Multi-Platform Accessibility
PressReader is available across multiple platforms including web browsers, iOS, Android, and dedicated apps, allowing users to read content seamlessly on smartphones, tablets, and desktops wherever they are.
  • Library and Hotel Partnerships
PressReader partners with public libraries, hotels, airlines, and other institutions to provide complimentary access to users. This means many people can enjoy the service for free through their local library card or while staying at participating hotels.
  • Full Replica and Interactive Formats
Publications are available in both full-page replica format (preserving the original newspaper/magazine layout) and a text-view mode for easier reading on smaller screens. This gives readers flexibility in how they consume content.
  • Offline Reading and Download Capability
Users can download publications for offline reading, which is particularly useful for travelers or those with limited internet connectivity. This makes it convenient to read content anytime without needing an active connection.

Possible disadvantages

  • Subscription Cost
The individual subscription price can be relatively expensive compared to other digital news services, especially for users who only read a handful of publications. Without institutional access (like a library), the cost may not be justified for casual readers.
  • Inconsistent Publication Availability
Not all publications are available in every region, and some major newspapers or magazines may be missing from the catalog or have delayed releases. Availability can also change without notice as licensing agreements shift.
  • App Performance Issues
Some users report that the app can be slow to load, especially when downloading large publications. The app may also experience occasional crashes, lag, or syncing issues across devices, which can detract from the reading experience.
  • Complex Navigation and Interface
With such a large volume of content, finding specific publications or articles can sometimes be cumbersome. The interface, while feature-rich, can feel cluttered and overwhelming for new users who are not familiar with the platform.
  • Limited Search and Archiving
The search functionality can be limited when trying to find older articles or past editions. Archived content availability varies by publication, and users may not be able to access back issues beyond a certain timeframe, limiting research capabilities.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing inputprobe DPI Test and PressReader.com.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

PC gamers dialing in sensitivity who want to know their real DPI rather than the nominal number on the box, mouse enthusiasts (the r/MouseReview crowd) comparing sensors and verifying units, and anyone troubleshooting a mouse that "feels wrong", since a few percent of unit-to-unit sensor variance is normal and measurable. More broadly, anyone who prefers a measurement with a stated error band over a confident guess.

What makes your product unique?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

Two things. First, it measures instead of guessing: a browser cannot ask a mouse for its DPI, so the test divides raw movement counts by the length of an object that is exact by international standard, every bank card on earth is 85.60 mm long (ISO/IEC 7810), and paper sizes are fixed by ISO 216. Second, it publishes its own error bars. The accuracy bands shown next to your result were measured over 51 complete runs on real hardware (results on A4 stay within ~3% of each other, on a bank card within ~6%), and when a capture can't support a number, the test refuses to print one and tells you why, rather than averaging a mess into a confident-looking figure.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

Most online mouse testers measure your monitor, not your mouse: they count one movement per drawn frame, so results are quietly capped by your display's refresh rate. inputprobe reads the individual device reports with their own timestamps, before that distortion happens. It also handles the errors other testers ignore: it detects OS pointer acceleration instead of blaming your mouse, uses displacement so your drag doesn't need to be straight, and includes an alignment check that solves for your placement error, the one mistake repeatability checks structurally cannot see. And everything runs locally in your browser: no account, no upload, no tracking.

What's the story behind your product?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

I tested my own mouse on the popular online testers and got answers that were confidently wrong, most of them were really measuring my monitor's refresh rate. So I built a set of testers around one rule: a verdict must quote the evidence it's based on, and when the evidence isn't good enough, the tool refuses to print a number. That meant doing the unglamorous part: running the DPI method 51 times across two mice to measure how accurate it actually is, publishing those bands next to every result, and writing up the full methodology (including what has not been validated yet) at inputprobe.com/methodology/.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

Plain-vanilla web platform, no frameworks: the measurement engine is dependency-free JavaScript ES modules. The site is static HTML generated by a small Python build (Jinja2 + Markdown), served from Cloudflare's edge. There is no backend at all, every measurement runs entirely in the browser and nothing is uploaded.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

inputprobe DPI Test's answer

None to list, it's a free tool with no accounts and no tracking, so we genuinely don't know who uses it, and we prefer it that way.
