HelperMate is a household management app used by two people: the employer and the domestic helper, each on their own phone.

The employer writes the day's tasks once in their own language. The helper opens their own app and reads the same list in theirs — across 10 languages including Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Myanmar (Burmese), Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Malay, Khmer and Lao. Nobody has to guess what was meant.

Around that shared task list, HelperMate keeps petty cash and expense records with receipt OCR, salary records, and reminders for the Ministry of Manpower deadlines that Singapore employers are responsible for — Work Permit renewal, the six-monthly medical examination and passport expiry.

Tasks can be marked done with an optional photo, never a required one. HelperMate is not a monitoring or tracking tool: there is no location tracking, and the helper's view is the shared household work rather than a dashboard about them.

It is also not a hiring marketplace, job board or employment agency. It is used after someone is hired, not to find them.

Only the employer's side can ever become a paid plan. The domestic helper's app is free permanently.

Built for Singapore. Data is encrypted and handled under Singapore's Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).

  • Per-person language
Tasks written once appear in each person's own language across 10, including Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog, Burmese, Thai and Vietnamese.
  • Schedules and routines
Reusable weekday, Saturday and Sunday routines generate each day's tasks automatically.
  • Petty cash and expenses

Analysis of Vim Python IDE

Overall verdict

  • Vim configured as a Python IDE (typically via plugins like coc.nvim, YouCompleteMe, ALE, jedi-vim, or NERDTree combined with configurations found in various GitHub repositories) is a solid choice for developers who value speed, keyboard-driven workflows, and deep customization, though it requires more setup effort than out-of-the-box IDEs like PyCharm or VS Code.

Why this product is good

  • Extremely lightweight and fast, even on older or resource-constrained hardware
  • Highly customizable through plugins (linting, autocompletion, debugging, git integration)
  • Keyboard-centric workflow enables very efficient editing once mastered
  • Works seamlessly over SSH and in terminal-only environments, great for remote server work
  • Free and open-source with a massive ecosystem of community-maintained configs and plugins
  • Consistent editing experience across many languages, not just Python

Recommended for

  • Experienced developers comfortable with the Vim/Neovim modal editing paradigm
  • Users who frequently work in terminal-only or remote/SSH environments
  • Developers who want a minimal, distraction-free coding environment
  • Engineers who enjoy building and maintaining their own custom tooling/config
  • Power users who prioritize speed and efficiency over GUI convenience
  • Those already familiar with Vim motions looking to extend it into a full Python dev environment

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing HelperMate and Vim Python IDE.

What makes your product unique?

HelperMate's answer

Both people use it. The employer writes the day's tasks once in their own language; the domestic helper opens their own app and reads the same list in theirs, across 10 languages including Bahasa Indonesia, Tagalog and Burmese. Most household apps assume everyone in the home reads the same language. In a Singapore household with a live-in helper, that is usually not true.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

HelperMate's answer

General family organisers assume a shared language and a shared calendar. HelperMate is built for a household where one person is an employer and the other is an employee who speaks a different language. It adds what that situation actually needs: per-person language, petty cash and salary records, and reminders for the Ministry of Manpower deadlines that Singapore employers are legally responsible for.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

HelperMate's answer

Singapore households employing a live-in foreign domestic worker, and the helpers themselves. Both sides are users: the employer runs the household, the helper receives and completes the work in their own language. Only the employer's side can ever become a paid plan.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

HelperMate's answer

HelperMate is built with Flutter and Dart, which lets the employer app and the helper app ship from a single codebase to both Android and iOS. The backend runs on Google Firebase — Cloud Firestore holds the shared household data so both phones stay in sync, and Firebase Hosting serves the website and blog. Machine translation drives the per-person language feature, and receipt OCR is used for expense capture.

What's the story behind your product?

HelperMate's answer

Almost everyone I know who employs a live-in domestic helper in Singapore runs into the same problem, and it is not the work — it is the communication. Instructions get given in one language and understood in another. Both sides end up frustrated about things neither of them meant.

I am about to hire a helper myself, and I did not want to run a household on sticky notes and a chat thread nobody can search. So I built the tool I wanted to use: one shared list, written once by the employer, read by the helper in their own language.

That is also why the helper's side is free. The person doing the work should not have to pay to read what they have been asked to do.
