Most memory-keeping tools record a story and hand it back to you exactly as it was recorded. Heirloom4Life lets your family ask new questions and get new answers.

After a parent or grandparent has recorded a few sessions, anyone in the family can ask them something — "What shaped you most?", "What do you hope we carry with us?" — and the app answers by drawing on everything they've ever shared. A grandfather who described his childhood in one session, his first job in another, and his father in two more will answer with something that weaves all of it together. That answer didn't exist in any single recording.

The other difference is that nobody has to figure out what to ask. Sam, our guided interviewer, leads the whole conversation by voice — the storyteller just talks for 20 to 40 minutes. No preparation, no typing, no homework. Everything is transcribed and organized by chapter of their life automatically, and compiles into a Book of Life the family keeps.

Heirloom4Life's answer

It depends what you want at the end.

Most products in this category — StoryWorth, Remento, and others — are book companies. The voice is captured, transcribed, polished into prose, and printed. Some attach a QR code to each page so you can hear the original recording. The book is the product; the voice is an attachment to it.

Heirloom4Life treats the voice as the product. The recordings stay whole, and they stay interactive — your family can keep asking questions for years and keep getting answers. You still get a compiled memoir (our Book of Life, exportable as a PDF), but it's an output, not the point.

Three practical differences:

Sessions run 20–40 minutes, not a fixed weekly prompt or a 10-minute cap — long enough for a real story. It works on iOS 15.1 and up, which matters when the storyteller is using a five-year-old iPhone. It's free to start. Download, record your first session, and see whether your parent takes to it before paying anything.

There are two people in every Heirloom4Life account, and they're rarely the same person.

The buyer is an adult child, typically 35–58, who has realized their parent won't be around forever and doesn't know how to start the conversation. They set the account up, often as a gift.

The storyteller is that parent or grandparent, usually 60+, who has a lifetime of stories nobody ever asked about. They're often not comfortable with technology, which is why the entire experience is a voice conversation — if they can take a phone call, they can use this.

Around them sits the rest of the family — siblings, grandchildren, relatives abroad — who join as viewers or contributors, add their own photos and documents, and ask their own questions.

We see particularly strong use among families with an aging parent in declining health, families separated across countries, and families preserving a specific heritage or a first-generation immigration story.

Heirloom4Life's answer

It started with one man's stories.

Yaacov Riesenberg is 93 and a Holocaust survivor. He's the father of our founder, Ehud Riesenberg, and the grandfather of two of our co-founders. Ehud wanted a way to keep his father's stories — not as a transcript in a drawer, but as something his family could actually return to and interact with for generations. Nothing that existed did that, so he built it.

When people heard about it, the reaction was immediate and the same every time: I need this for my mother. That response turned a personal project into a company.

The founding team is unusual for a consumer app. Ehud's nephews, Ben and Guy Riesenberg, both served as officers in the Golani Brigade and are both combat-wounded IDF veterans. Tomas, our Head of R&D, served alongside them in Golani and builds the technology behind Sam. People who have come close to losing their own story tend to understand the urgency of this work without needing it explained.

That origin shows up in the product: the warmth of Sam's interview style, the insistence on voice over text, and the design for families scattered across the world.

Heirloom4Life's answer

Heirloom4Life is a consumer product — our customers are families, not companies, and their memoirs are private by default, so we don't publish names.

The clearest pattern we see is adult children in their 40s and 50s setting it up for a parent in their 70s, 80s, or 90s, often around a birthday or a health scare. We also see multi-generational and immigrant families preserving a heritage in a language the grandchildren don't speak fluently, and families using it for a grandparent who served in the military.

We're beginning conversations with organizations in senior living, hospice, and veterans' services, where the same need exists at scale.
