  • Wide Hardware Support
DPDK supports a broad range of network interface cards (NICs) from various vendors, thus offering versatility in the choice of hardware while ensuring high performance.
  • Rich Set of Features
DPDK offers a comprehensive set of networking functions, libraries, and tools, providing a robust environment for developing complex networking applications.

Possible disadvantages of DPDK

  • Complexity
The learning curve for DPDK can be steep due to its low-level programming requirements and the necessity of understanding hardware and networking concepts to fully utilize its capabilities.
  • Lack of Debugging Tools
DPDK operates in user space with limited use of the kernel, which can complicate debugging processes compared to more traditional network stack environments.
  • Resource Intensive
DPDK applications can consume significant CPU and memory resources to achieve high performance, which might not be optimal for environments with resource constraints.
  • Network Stack Bypass Limitations
While bypassing the kernel can provide performance benefits, it can also lead to issues with integrating with other kernel-based network functions or security features, requiring additional development effort to bridge the gap.
  • Limited Community Support
Although the DPDK project is actively maintained, the community is relatively smaller compared to more established projects, which can affect the availability of community support and resources.

DPDK mentions (1)

  • announcement of freerouter for telco or enterprise use cases
Regarding explicit gear suggestion, for the dpdk dataplane, basically any recent pc could do... One thing to note well, check the dpdk.org for hardware compatibility... it's very picky on nic and cpu.... My personal suggestion here is aliexpress, search for "pfsense 10gbps" and friends and go for intel nics and i7 cpu to have something really usable.... :). Source: over 4 years ago
