grappa features and specs

  • Expressive Assertions
Grappa provides a rich set of expressive assertions which allow for writing readable and concise test cases.
  • Chainable Syntax
The library supports a chainable syntax that can improve the readability and maintainability of test assertions.
  • Integration
Grappa can be integrated with multiple testing frameworks, such as Pytest, which can make it easier to incorporate into existing test suites.
  • Extensibility
The framework supports custom matchers, allowing developers to extend the library's functionality tailored to their specific needs.

Possible disadvantages of grappa

  • Learning Curve
For developers new to the library, there may be a learning curve associated with understanding the syntax and capabilities of Grappa.
  • Documentation
Depending on the state of the project, the documentation may not be comprehensive, potentially making it challenging for new users to learn.
  • Community Support
As a niche library, Grappa might not have as large a community or support as some more widely used testing frameworks.
  • Maintenance
Open-source projects can sometimes experience slower development and updates, which could impact long-term usability if the project becomes less actively maintained.

SDelete features and specs

  • Secure Deletion
SDelete ensures that files are securely deleted by overwriting the data, making it extremely difficult to recover using standard data recovery tools.
  • Freeware
Available at no cost, SDelete provides a powerful tool for secure deletion without the need for a commercial license.
  • Command-Line Utility
SDelete can be operated from the command line, allowing for scripting and automation, which is particularly useful for advanced users and system administrators.
  • File and Free Space Management
In addition to securely deleting files, SDelete can also wipe free space on a disk, ensuring that remnants of previously deleted files are unrecoverable.
  • Trusted Source
Being part of the Sysinternals suite from Microsoft, SDelete is a trusted and reputable tool.

Possible disadvantages of SDelete

  • Complexity
As a command-line tool, SDelete may not be user-friendly for individuals who are not comfortable using the command prompt or scripting.
  • Performance Impact
Securely deleting files and wiping free space can be a time-consuming process, particularly on large disks, potentially impacting system performance during operation.
  • No Graphical Interface
SDelete lacks a graphical user interface (GUI), which may deter less technical users from utilizing the tool.
  • Limited to Windows
SDelete is designed specifically for Windows operating systems, limiting its usability for users on other platforms like macOS or Linux.
  • Potential for Misuse
Given its powerful data destruction capabilities, there's a risk of accidental data loss if not used carefully, especially by inexperienced users.

Analysis of grappa

Overall verdict

  • Grappa is a solid, mature parsing library for the JVM that lets developers build parsers directly in Java using a fluent, PEG-based (Parsing Expression Grammar) approach without needing a separate grammar file or code generation step.

Why this product is good

  • Uses Parsing Expression Grammars (PEG), which are unambiguous and easier to reason about than traditional context-free grammars
  • Grammars are written in pure Java as a fluent DSL, so there's no external grammar file or code-generation build step
  • Integrates naturally into existing Java/JVM projects and tooling
  • Supports parser actions, error recovery, and value stack manipulation for building ASTs
  • Successor to the popular Parboiled library, benefiting from lessons learned in that project
  • Open source and hostable/inspectable directly on GitHub

Recommended for

  • Java and JVM developers who want to build parsers without learning a separate grammar language
  • Projects needing custom domain-specific languages (DSLs) or configuration formats
  • Developers who prefer PEG semantics over ambiguous CFG-based tools like ANTLR
  • Teams that want parser logic kept inline in their codebase rather than generated
  • Prototyping and small-to-medium parsing tasks where fluent Java code is convenient

Analysis of SDelete

Overall verdict

  • SDelete is a reliable tool for securely deleting files on Windows systems. It's a good choice for users who need to ensure that deleted files are not recoverable, and who are comfortable using command line utilities. However, users should be aware that improper use can lead to data loss, so caution and familiarity with command-line interfaces are recommended.

Why this product is good

  • SDelete is a command line utility from Microsoft that securely deletes files by overwriting their disk space. It is considered effective for permanently removing sensitive data, as it ensures that the data cannot be recovered by any means. This can be important for maintaining privacy and security, especially in contexts where sensitive information is handled.

Recommended for

  • IT professionals who need to permanently remove sensitive data from systems.
  • Security-focused users who require enhanced privacy measures.
  • Advanced Windows users who are familiar with command line operations.
  • Organizations that need compliance with data protection regulations requiring secure file deletion.

  • Keep your files safe. What can happen if you throw away a defective hard drive?
What lessons can we take away from my story? They are, in fact, quite simple and obvious: merely deleting files and quick formatting is usually not enough when disposing of or selling hard drives. For more assurance, itโ€™s better to perform a full format (in modern operating systems, of course). And for the truly paranoid, thereโ€™s the good old console utility SDelete from the Sysinternals suite or a tool named... - Source: dev.to / almost 3 years ago
  • Hyper V VM full disk, wonโ€™t boot
I assume you were using a dynamically expanding disk - if so just note it won't dynamically contract just by deleting files. To shrink the drive you will likely need to run sdelete -z on the drive inside the VM to clear the free space, then edit and compact the VHDX. You will need to be able to boot the VM to run sdelete though so you'll need to temporarily move other files off the drive, or move the VM files to... Source: about 3 years ago
  • Does formatting a drive remove bitlocker encryption from formatted data?
You can always download sdelete https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/downloads/sdelete and do an overwrite pass just to be safe. It'll take a while but you can do other things while it's running. Source: about 3 years ago
  • Bitwarden backups
My understanding is that it doesn't completely solve it. I don't have time to dig up an authoritative source for this claim โ€” hopefully this superuser comment will suffice. I believe that you can achieve something close to a secure erase by filling up your SSD to 100% capacity with data before deleting; the utility sdelete supposedly does this when using the -c option.
