Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

Tattoo.Guide 5 features
Modular JavaScript 5 features
  • Niche-Focused Content
The site appears to concentrate specifically on tattoo-related information, which can make it a go-to resource for design ideas, meanings, and inspiration for people interested in getting tattoos.
  • Design Inspiration
Likely offers a variety of tattoo styles, symbols, and design galleries that can help users browse and choose ideas before visiting a tattoo artist.
  • Educational Value
May provide articles on tattoo meanings, history, and cultural significance, helping users make more informed decisions about their body art.
  • Accessibility
Being a website, it is easily accessible from any device with internet access, allowing users to research tattoos anytime without needing to visit a physical shop first.
  • Free Resource
As a guide-type website, it likely offers free access to its content, making it a cost-effective way to explore tattoo ideas before committing to a paid tattoo session.
  • Improved Code Organization
Modular JavaScript allows developers to break down code into smaller, manageable modules. This enhances code readability and maintainability by organizing related functionality together.
  • Code Reusability
Modules encourage reusability by allowing the same piece of code to be used across different projects or multiple areas of the same application, reducing redundancy.
  • Scalability
As the application grows, managing code becomes easier with modular JavaScript. Each module can be developed, tested, and maintained independently, making the codebase more scalable.
  • Encapsulation
Modules provide encapsulation, preventing variables and functions from polluting the global namespace. This reduces the risk of naming conflicts and bugs.
  • Improved Testing
With code organized into discrete modules, writing unit tests becomes more straightforward. Each module can be tested individually, leading to more reliable and maintainable tests.

Possible disadvantages

  • Increased Complexity
Introducing modularity can add complexity to the build process, as it often requires module loaders or bundlers (like Webpack or Browserify) to manage dependencies.
  • Overhead
For smaller projects, using a modular approach might be overkill, introducing unnecessary overhead in terms of setup, configuration, and code management.
  • Learning Curve
Developers unfamiliar with modular JavaScript may face a learning curve, especially when dealing with module patterns, loaders, and bundlers.
  • Dependency Management
Relying on multiple modules can lead to complex dependency chains, making it challenging to track and resolve dependencies across different modules.
  • Performance Overhead
Modular JavaScript can introduce performance overhead if not managed properly, such as loading many small modules individually, leading to increased HTTP requests.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Tattoo.Guide and Modular JavaScript.

What makes your product unique?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

Global Tattoo Guide isn't a scraped list of businesses like a Google or Yelp search. Every shop on the map is personally vetted by some of the best tattoo artists in the world. We rank and review artists by hand, and we visit shops in person.

Starred shops are guaranteed to be personally visited by our team, and Nominees are personally ranked and reviewed by top artists.

That human curation, combined with a fast map you can filter by style and location, is what sets it apart.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

Because you're not gambling on reviews from strangers. When you search Google, Yelp, or Instagram, you get an unvetted pile of shops and no real way to judge quality or filter by style.

Global Tattoo Guide gives you artists and studios that people who actually know great tattooing have personally stood behind, plotted on a map you can filter by style and location. It's free, needs no signup to browse, and takes you from "I want this kind of piece near me" to a trustworthy shortlist in seconds.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

Two groups. First, anyone planning a tattoo who wants to find a great, trustworthy artist near them without spending an afternoon scrolling Instagram. Especially people who care about a specific style.

Second, tattoo artists and studios who want to be discovered by people actively looking to get tattooed.

What's the story behind your product?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

The idea started with Jake and Kelly Bertelsen. Finding a tattoo artist has always been broken: you open Instagram, search a hashtag, scroll forever, and still have no idea who's good or close by. There's no way to filter by style and location, and no trustworthy way to judge quality. So we spent just over a year building the thing that should already exist: a map of tattoo artists and studios that are personally vetted and ranked by some of the best artists in the world.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

  • Django (Python) backend
  • Mapbox GL JS for the interactive map and clustering
  • WordPress as the content/data source so the team can manage listings without touching code
  • MySQL database
  • JavaScript front end
  • Hosted on Cloudways

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Tattoo.Guide's answer

Global Tattoo Guide is a free consumer platform, so it doesn't have paying customers in the traditional SaaS sense. Its users are:

  • People planning a tattoo who are looking for a vetted artist near them
  • Tattoo artists and studios who want to be discovered
