Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing GitLab and OrmFactory.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

OrmFactory's answer:

OrmFactory is built with C# and .NET 8, using Avalonia UI for its cross-platform desktop interface. It runs natively on Windows, macOS, and Linux, with x64 and ARM64 builds. Native AOT is used for the desktop application, with performance and low resource usage being important design goals.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

OrmFactory's answer:

There aren't any big-name customers to brag about yet. OrmFactory is currently used by individual developers and engineering teams, including developers working in large engineering organizations. I don't claim a company as a customer simply because one of its developers uses OrmFactory.

What's the story behind your product?

OrmFactory's answer:

OrmFactory exists because I wanted to build the database tool I actually wanted to use. I make tools because that's what I know how to do โ€” I wrote my first one for the ZX Spectrum back in 1997.

Over the years, I got tired of products being shaped by management decisions, marketing requirements, and feature checklists rather than by the people who actually use them. With OrmFactory, I decided to do it differently: build the tool the way I believe it should work, keep the underlying philosophy intact, and let developers decide whether that approach works for them.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

OrmFactory's answer:

You don't have to choose OrmFactory. Different tools suit different workflows. OrmFactory is for developers who want a model-first approach, a fully customizable workflow, and a database tool they can use every day, from designing and evolving schemas to working with actual data and generating documentation.

What makes your product unique?

OrmFactory's answer:

OrmFactory is a model-first database tool with a fully customizable workflow. The model is the source of truth, while schema design, comparison, migrations, synchronization, and ORM generation can be combined and adapted to fit your way of working.

It is designed to be a developerโ€™s everyday database tool, making working with data a first-class part of the product alongside modeling and schema management.

Because the model is part of your everyday workflow, it can also serve as a source for documentation and visual artifacts, with diagrams available as generated SVGs for use in documentation, reviews, and other project materials.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

OrmFactory's answer:

You shouldn't choose OrmFactory because it claims to be better than everything else. Choose it if its model-first approach and flexible workflow fit the way you work. OrmFactory is designed as an everyday developer tool rather than a specialized database designer or administration console, combining model management, schema evolution, ORM generation, and hands-on data work in one place.

Best GitHub Alternatives for Developers in 2023
While GitLab features an extensive set of capabilities, this can also serve as a weakness since beginners may find the developer tool overwhelming to begin with.
