YakWP is a self-hosted AI chatbot plugin for WordPress. You install it on your own site and bring your own API key — Google Gemini (free tier, 500 requests/day), OpenAI, OpenCode Go, or OpenRouter. Features and specs

What each product offers, as listed by its team.

git-fastclone 5 features
YakWP 15 features
  • Faster clone times
git-fastclone speeds up cloning of repositories with submodules by using reference repositories and caching, avoiding redundant downloads of shared objects across multiple clones.
  • Efficient submodule handling
It automates the recursive cloning and updating of git submodules, reducing the manual overhead typically involved in managing nested repositories.
  • Local object caching
By maintaining a local cache of repository objects, it minimizes network usage and disk space when cloning multiple repositories that share common history or dependencies.
  • Simple drop-in usage
It is designed to be used similarly to the standard git clone command, making it easy for teams to adopt without significant changes to their existing workflows.
  • Useful for CI/CD pipelines
Its speed improvements are particularly beneficial in continuous integration environments where repositories with many submodules are cloned repeatedly, reducing build times.

Possible disadvantages

  • Limited maintenance
The project has seen infrequent updates and community activity in recent years, which may raise concerns about long-term support and compatibility with newer git versions.
  • Narrow use case
It is primarily beneficial for repositories with many submodules; for simple repositories without submodules, the performance gains are minimal or negligible.
  • Additional complexity
Introducing a caching and reference mechanism adds complexity to the clone process, which could lead to unexpected issues if the cache becomes corrupted or outdated.
  • Dependency on Ruby environment
Since git-fastclone is implemented as a Ruby gem, users need a working Ruby environment installed, which can be an extra setup requirement for teams not already using Ruby.
  • Potential caching pitfalls
Improper cache invalidation or stale cached objects can potentially lead to inconsistencies in cloned repositories if not carefully managed.
  • Self-hosted & BYOK
Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenCode Go, or OpenRouter. Runs on your own WordPress hosting; no Yak account or monthly fee.
  • RAG (grounded answers)
Reads your posts and pages so the chatbot answers from your real content, not generic AI text.
  • Semantic vector search
Matches questions by meaning — "how much does it cost" finds the pricing page even if it never says "cost".
  • Four chatbot modes
Sales, Support, Explain, and Custom — each with its own system prompt preset.
  • Lead Capture
Automatically requests the visitor's email on buying intent or when they ask for human help.
  • Quick replies & ratings
Pre-suggested follow-up replies and thumbs-up/down response ratings to keep conversations flowing.
  • Webhook export
Streams every conversation (message, AI reply, captured email, page URL, timestamp) to n8n, Zapier, Make, or any endpoint.
  • GDPR notice & rate limiting
Built-in privacy notice and configurable request throttling to protect your site.
  • Conversation retention
Stores chats in your own WordPress database with configurable retention period.
  • Dark mode
Matches your site theme out of the box.
  • White-label (Pro)
Remove the "Powered by Yak" branding. (subscription or €64 lifetime)
  • CSV export (Pro)
Export conversations to CSV for CRM / analysis.
  • Custom widget CSS (Pro)
Fully style the chat widget to your brand.
  • Priority email support (Pro)
    Direct, faster help channel.
  • Multi-site licensing (Pro)
    Lifetime packs for 3, 5, 10, or 30 sites.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing git-fastclone and YakWP.

What makes your product unique?

YakWP's answer:

It's self-hosted with bring-your-own-key (BYOK). You run the chatbot on your own WordPress hosting and connect your own Gemini, OpenAI, OpenCode Go, or OpenRouter key — there's no Yak server, no monthly SaaS fee, and no per-seat lock-in. On top of that it uses semantic vector search, so answers are grounded in your actual pages and match by meaning, not just keywords.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

YakWP's answer:

Most AI chatbots either charge $50–100/month, route every conversation through a third-party cloud, or cripple the free tier. YakWP's free version is fully functional (RAG, semantic search, lead capture, webhooks), keeps all conversational data in your own WordPress database, and gives you a real choice: pay nothing, or unlock Pro from just €2.99/month with no recurring minimum even so.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

YakWP's answer:

WordPress site owners and small-to-medium businesses who want a helpful AI chat widget without a cloud subscription — solo founders, local businesses, agencies managing multiple client sites — plus developers who prefer self-hosted, privacy-friendly tools.

What's the story behind your product?

YakWP's answer:

It's a solo-built product created out of frustration with cloud chatbot pricing and data lock-in. The maker runs an AI-automation business and wanted a conversational widget that lived on the customer's own site, used their own API key, and gave up nothing in the free tier — so he built Yak and packaged it for other WordPress owners.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

YakWP's answer:

A standard WordPress plugin (PHP, hooks, REST API) with a JavaScript front-end widget, GPT/Qwen-style large language models via Google Gemini, OpenAI, OpenCode Go, or OpenRouter, and vector/semantic search for RAG over the site's own posts and pages. It requires WP 6.0+ and PHP 7.4+.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

YakWP's answer:

We're in the early-adoption phase, so the core customer base is indie site owners and small agencies who self-host the plugin and bring their own keys. Rather than claim large named accounts we don't have, I'd describe the current base honestly as agile small businesses and WordPress developers — and highlight that the free tier is fully functional, so anyone can try it before paying.
