Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Fomodo and Study Focus Timer.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Fomodo's answer

Three reasons. First, coverage: most pomodoro apps (Focus Keeper, Session, Focus To-Do) don't block anything, and most blockers (Opal, one sec, Freedom) don't give you real session methods โ€” Fomodo is both in one app, natively. Second, no guilt mechanics: no tree that dies, no coins, no punishment for a missed day โ€” just your time, honest stats and a heatmap you can trust. Third, fair terms: the free tier is genuinely usable, there's a one-time lifetime option instead of a forced subscription, and the whole app is localized into 17 languages โ€” which almost no indie competitor bothers with.

What makes your product unique?

Fomodo's answer

Fomodo doesn't just measure focus โ€” it enforces it. It combines four session models (Pomodoro, Deep Work / flowtime, and two Ultradian rhythms) with real app blocking through Apple's Screen Time API, so distracting apps are shielded while the timer runs. On top of that: 8 full-screen countdown faces, a Lock Screen Live Activity with working controls, interactive widgets that start a session without opening the app, 7 gapless ambient sounds, and 17 languages. Sessions are also crash-proof โ€” force-quit or reboot your phone and the timer reconciles to real elapsed time instead of losing your progress.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Fomodo's answer

Three overlapping groups, all on iPhone and iPad. (1) Students and exam candidates who need long, verifiable study blocks and want proof of the hours they put in. (2) Knowledge workers โ€” developers, designers, writers, researchers โ€” who work in Deep Work or 90-minute ultradian blocks rather than 25-minute ones. (3) People who describe themselves as easily distracted, or as having ADHD, and want an external constraint plus a visible record of what they actually did. Mostly 18โ€“35, iPhone-first, and international โ€” hence the 17 languages.

What's the story behind your product?

Fomodo's answer

Fomodo started from a personal annoyance: I could start a 25-minute timer and pick up my phone thirty seconds later. The timer recorded the failure โ€” it never prevented it. So I built the timer and the blocker as one thing, on top of Apple's Screen Time API.

Two engineering problems shaped the app. Making blocking actually reliable inside Apple's FamilyControls / DeviceActivity constraints, and making a focus session survive real life: every session is snapshotted, so after a crash, force-quit or reboot the app replays the snapshot to the current time instead of silently resetting to zero. Once that worked, I localized it into 17 languages so it wouldn't only be an English-market app.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Fomodo's answer

Native iOS, Swift and SwiftUI, iOS 17.6+. Clean Architecture with MVVM and Swift's @Observable. Core Data with CloudKit for local storage and iCloud sync (no server, no account, no sign-up). App blocking via Apple's Screen Time stack โ€” FamilyControls, ManagedSettings and DeviceActivity, plus Shield extensions. ActivityKit for Live Activities, WidgetKit and App Intents for the interactive widgets, AVFoundation for the gapless PCM ambient loops, StoreKit 2 for purchases, and Swift Testing for the test suite. Localization is a String Catalog covering 17 languages.
