Docker, Distrobox, Flatpak, and a bit of Homebrew where it makes sense. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago
Https://flatpak.org/ does this on Linux and someone else already pointed out, MacOS does this with app store apps. I don't like handing control to Apple so I much prefer the FlatPak solution - you get very detailed and fine grained control over what each app can see and it works fairly seamlessly. It's still a bit technical - but not far from being user friendly even for a less tech savvy user. - Source: Hacker News / 5 months ago
Features Fedora leads. Others follow. Systemd? Fedora pioneered it. Wayland? Fedora adopted it early. Flatpak? Fedora helped develop it. - Source: dev.to / 6 months ago
There are things like this. The things I know of and can think of off the top of my head are: 1. Appimage https://appimage.org/ 2. nix-bundle https://github.com/nix-community/nix-bundle 3. Guix via guix pack 4. A small collection of random small projects hardly anyone uses for docker to do this (i.e. https://github.com/NilsIrl/dockerc ) 5. A docker image (a package that runs everywhere, assuming a docker runtime... - Source: Hacker News / 8 months ago

Yes, Gentoo Setup is efficient, still I find it's a geek way. Gentoo is great for those who love Gentoo. Hence this time I will do the same with Arch Linux to simplify the setup. Also I will convert images to JPEG this time thanks to the fantastic progress done by JPEG XL Team. For videos I will stick to the MP4 with HEVC. - Source: dev.to / 3 months ago
I moved from Fedora and KDE to a mostly vanilla Arch Linux setup. I moved from a traditional desktop environment to niri, a scrolling Wayland compositor. And of course, like every developer out there, my workflow now has AI in it. But this time, I wanted something a bit different: AI-assisted development that can run fully offline on my own machine. - Source: dev.to / 4 months ago

> Having very frequent updates to bleeding edge software versions, often requiring manual intervention is not "stable". An arch upgrade may, without warning, replace your config files and update software to versions incompatible with the previous. 12 in the last year if you used all the software (I don’t many people are running dovecot and zabbix), so probably actually like 3 for most users: ... - Source: Hacker News / 7 months ago
