ExifVoid's answer
ExifVoid is the only photo metadata tool that combines a visual privacy risk scanner with 100% client-side processing. It doesn't just remove EXIF data โ it shows you exactly what's hidden in your photos, scores the privacy risk, and displays GPS coordinates on an interactive map, all before you clean. Your files never leave your browser. Most competitors upload your photos to their servers for processing, which defeats the purpose of a privacy tool
Axcrypt's answer:
1. Truly Easy File Encryption
AxCrypt keeps encryption simpleโright-click a file, encrypt it, and youโre done. No complicated setup, no confusing options.
2. Automatic Cloud Protection
It works seamlessly with Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and other cloud folders. Files get encrypted before they sync, keeping your cloud data safe.
3. Built-In Password Manager
Unlike most encryption tools, AxCrypt includes a secure password manager, so you can protect documents and store passwords in the same app.
4. Strong AES-256 Security
AxCrypt uses industry-standard AES-256 encryption with modern key handlingโtrusted by professionals for protecting sensitive data.
5. Secure File Sharing
You can share encrypted files with others securely using their AxCrypt ID, without exposing passwords.
6. Multi-platform Support
Available on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS, so your encrypted files stay accessible anywhere.
7. Proven and Trusted
AxCrypt has been around for years, is widely reviewed, and is known for its stability and reliabilityโmaking it trusted by individuals and companies.
8. Open and Transparent
AxCryptโs core design and encryption approach are transparent, unlike some alternatives that lack independent verification or a track record.
ExifVoid's answer
Most metadata removal tools upload your files to remote servers โ you're handing your private data to a third party in order to remove it. ExifVoid processes everything locally in your browser using JavaScript. No uploads, no server storage, no accounts. It also goes beyond simple removal by showing you a full privacy scan with threat categories, risk scoring, and a GPS map of your photo's location. No other free tool offers that level of visibility before cleaning.

ExifVoid's answer
Anyone who shares photos online and cares about privacy. This includes eBay and marketplace sellers whose product photos may expose their home address, online daters who want to protect their location, journalists and activists who need to strip metadata to protect sources, photographers managing what data they share publicly, and businesses handling customer photos under GDPR. If you share photos with strangers, ExifVoid is for you.
Axcrypt's answer:
Personal users protecting documents like IDs, financial papers, medical files, and cloud backups.
Professionals & freelancers who share confidential files with clients and need secure workflows.
Small businesses & teams needing quick, dependable file-level encryption without enterprise complexity.
Non-technical users who want strong protection but prefer a clean, simple interface.
ExifVoid's answer
I discovered that every photo I'd ever listed on eBay contained my exact home GPS coordinates โ accurate to a few metres. When I looked for a tool to fix this, every option either uploaded my files to a server or was a complex command-line tool. I wanted something simple: drop in a photo, see what's hidden, remove it, done. And it had to work entirely in the browser so my files never left my device. That's ExifVoid.
ExifVoid's answer
Next.js 14 with static export for the framework, Tailwind CSS for styling, the exifr library for reading EXIF/XMP/IPTC metadata, Leaflet with OpenStreetMap for displaying GPS coordinates on a map, and canvas re-encoding for metadata stripping. Hosted on Vercel with automatic deployments from GitHub. The entire tool runs client-side โ there is no backend server.

I built ExifVoid (https://exifvoid.com) to make it dead simple to check what metadata is hiding in your photos and strip it before sharing. - Source: Hacker News / 4 months ago
With regard to encryption tools, I use AxCrypt, which is cross-platform, but isn't free in that form. It would though encrypt each file in-place, without need for a dedicated folder or vault and encrypted file will sync with OneDrive, via the standard sync client. It would also allow you to share encrypted files with others, without giving them your encryption password. Source: over 4 years ago
