Other software KVMs share a keyboard and mouse between computers that each keep their own screen, and you cross between them by moving the pointer to the screen edge. EasyKVM is built for two computers sharing one monitor. The same hotkey that moves the keyboard, mouse and audio also switches the monitor's input over DDC/CI, so the screen follows your hands instead of staying where it was.

That also sets it apart from remote desktop. Nothing is encoded or streamed. Each computer keeps driving the monitor directly at full resolution and refresh rate, and everything stays on your local network.

Synergy, Barrier, Input Leap, Deskflow, Mouse Without Borders and Logitech Flow move the keyboard and mouse, and then you reach for the monitor's input button yourself. ShareMouse Professional can switch a shared display, although its own documentation describes that as an experimental function outside the official product specification. In EasyKVM the monitor switch is the product rather than a side feature, and system audio moves with it in both directions.

It is also cheaper to own. $29.99 once covers both macOS and Windows for one user, with no subscription and no account to create. Only the machine acting as host needs a licence; the second computer joins with nothing.

Nothing leaves your local network. There is no relay server, no analytics and no telemetry, so keystrokes, clipboard and audio stay between the two machines on your desk.

People with two computers at one desk and one monitor between them. A work laptop next to a personal machine is the most common setup, and Mac plus Windows is a common pairing, though any two computers work.

The alternatives each leave something out. A hardware KVM box means matching ports and cables, and on a high-refresh or 4K panel it often costs resolution or refresh rate. Mouse-sharing software moves the pointer but leaves the screen where it was, so you still reach for the monitor's input button.

It is a single-user desk tool rather than an IT product. There is no fleet management and no server involved, and it works with exactly two machines.

I started a job that gave me a Mac, and I already had a PC at home for everything else. One monitor between them.

At first I thought I only needed the keyboard and mouse to move, so I put the Mac next to the screen and bought Synergy. That worked until I actually had to look at the Mac. Its own display was too small to work on, so I ended up reaching behind the monitor to change the input every time I switched machines. It was slow, and it got old fast.

The edge crossing never felt right either. Dragging the pointer off the side of the screen to land on another computer is a strange way to switch when both machines are sitting right in front of you.

So I built what I actually wanted: one hotkey that moves the screen and the peripherals together.
