DocTranslating is a web-based document translation platform that supports PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and code files (.ts, .js, .py, .php, and 20+ more). Pick from four translation engines โ€” DeepL, Gemini, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure โ€” and translate a single file into multiple languages in one go. Upload once, select your targets, hit translate. What makes it different: โ€” Code-aware translation: Translate comments and strings in code files while keeping syntax intact (Gemini-powered) โ€” Bulk jobs: Translate one document into 10 languages simultaneously instead of uploading 10 times โ€” Four engines, one interface: Compare DeepL's European language quality, Gemini's AI flexibility, or Google/Azure's breadth โ€” all in one tool โ€” PDF intelligence: Locked PDF detection, scanned document OCR, page-count awareness โ€” Format preservation: Your translated documents keep their original layout Built by an indie developer as part of the PDFEquips ecosystem (231 points on Hacker News). Free to try, pay-as-you-go for heavy usage.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing DocTranslator and DocTranslating.

What's the story behind your product?

DocTranslating's answer:

I needed to translate my app's content files into 25 languages. Uploading the same file 25 times and manually selecting a different target language each time felt broken. So I built a tool where you upload once, pick all your target languages, and get everything back in a ZIP. The code translation feature came from the same frustration โ€” DocTranslating is a spinoff from PDFEquips, a PDF toolkit I've been running for 2+ years with thousands of monthly users.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

DocTranslating's answer:

Most translation tools lock you into one engine. DocTranslating gives you four โ€” DeepL, Gemini, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure โ€” so you can pick the best one for your language pair and budget. The bulk translation feature saves hours if you work with multilingual content. And if you maintain codebases with i18n files, the code translator is something you won't find on Google Translate or DeepL's own interface.

What makes your product unique?

DocTranslating's answer:

DocTranslating lets you upload a document once and translate it into multiple languages simultaneously โ€” instead of repeating the same upload for each language. It also supports code file translation, where Gemini translates comments and strings in .ts, .js, .py, .php and 20+ other formats while preserving syntax. No other browser-based translator offers both bulk multi-language output and code-aware translation in one tool.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

DocTranslating's answer:

Developers managing multilingual codebases and i18n content files. Freelance translators and agencies handling document batches. Small businesses and content creators who need to localize PDFs, presentations, or spreadsheets into multiple languages without paying for enterprise translation platforms.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

DocTranslating's answer:

Astro.js and React on the frontend, Tailwind CSS for styling, Redux Toolkit and Zustand for state management. The backend is Node.js/Express with a separate microservice per translator engine. PostgreSQL with Sequelize for user data and billing. pdf.js for client-side PDF analysis. Deployed on Linux VPS with nginx and PM2.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

DocTranslating's answer:

Freelance developers localizing open-source projects Small agencies translating client documents across multiple languages Content creators preparing multilingual marketing materials Solo founders managing i18n for their SaaS products
