Dictato is a speech-to-text app for Mac that turns your voice into clean, ready-to-send text in any application. Press a hotkey, speak, and your words appear right where your cursor is: email, browser, code editor, chat, anywhere.

Everything runs 100% on your Mac. Audio is transcribed locally by state-of-the-art AI engines (NVIDIA Parakeet, OpenAI Whisper, Apple Speech), so nothing ever leaves your machine: no cloud, no account, no data collection. Transcription starts in about 80 ms and works fully offline.

Version 1.0 introduces Profiles: Dictato adapts its output to the app you are dictating into. Set a rule per application (or even per website in supported browsers) to keep your words verbatim, proofread them, translate them, or rewrite them in a specific tone. Ready-made tones ship with the app (Email, Report, Legal, Commit message, Code review, Bullet points, Summary, AI prompt, Social post and more), and you can create or customize your own. Rewriting also runs on-device, powered by a local language model.

Also in 1.0: - Numbers, dates, times and phone numbers are formatted automatically and offline ("twelve thirty pm" becomes "12:30 pm") - Smarter proofreading that restores sentence breaks, commas and paragraphs - A redesigned recording bar with a per-dictation tone picker - Faster transcription across the board

Dictato supports multilingual dictation (English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and many more), including switching languages mid-dictation, custom vocabulary for names and jargon, spoken commands, and a searchable dictation history.

Pricing: one-time purchase of 19.99 EUR with a lifetime license and lifetime updates. No subscription, no recurring AI costs, 7-day free trial. Requires macOS 14 or later on Apple Silicon.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Dictato and Daystack.

What's the story behind your product?

Dictato's answer

Dictato started from frustration. Existing dictation tools were either cloud-based (privacy concerns), slow (seconds of latency), or limited (Apple's 60-second timeout). I wanted something that felt instant, worked offline, and respected my data. So I built it. A native Mac app, optimized for Apple Silicon, that just works.

What makes your product unique?

Dictato's answer

Dictato is the only macOS dictation app that combines 80ms latency, 100% on-device processing, and 3 speech engines in one tool. Your voice never leaves your Mac - no internet required, no cloud, no data collection. Switch between Whisper, Parakeet, or Apple's engine depending on your needs. Works in any app where you can type. One-time purchase, no subscription.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Dictato's answer

Privacy without compromise: while competitors send audio to cloud servers, Dictato processes everything locally. You get near-instant 80ms transcription (faster than most cloud services), unlimited recording with no 60-second timeout, and a one-time $9.99 price instead of $10-20/month subscriptions. No account needed - download and start dictating.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Dictato's answer

Writers, developers, and professionals who value privacy and speed. People frustrated with Apple's built-in dictation limits. Anyone with RSI or accessibility needs who types for hours daily. Privacy-conscious users who refuse to send their voice to cloud servers. Multilingual users who need automatic language detection across 25+ languages.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Dictato's answer

Native Swift and SwiftUI for a true macOS experience. CoreML for on-device AI inference on Apple Silicon. OpenAI's Whisper model for high-accuracy transcription. NVIDIA's Parakeet for speed-optimized dictation. Apple's Speech framework as a lightweight alternative. All processing happens locally on your Mac's Neural Engine.
