Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Demarka and Cert Decoder.

What's the story behind your product?

Demarka's answer

Demarka was built by a patent attorney with 15+ years of experience in intellectual property and software development.

In practice, trademark verification required manual work: searching databases, analyzing similarities, checking compliance, and forming a registrability opinion. The process was time-consuming, expensive, and hard to scale.

Demarka automates this entire workflow — and goes further by combining similarity analysis, compliance checks, and probability estimation into a single system.

The idea originated from a previous IP management product, where trademark search and monitoring features attracted the most demand. It became clear that existing tools were either complex databases or expensive manual services.

Demarka was created to provide fast, affordable, and understandable trademark verification — giving clear answers instead of raw data.

Cert Decoder's answer:

I built certdecoder.com over the weekend for my own needs. Sometimes in my work, I need to verify and check certificate details.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Demarka's answer

– Cloud-based SaaS architecture
– Trademark similarity algorithms (phonetic, linguistic, edit distance)
– Machine learning for pattern recognition
– LLM-based analysis for compliance checks and probability estimation
– Aggregated trademark data from official registries across 90+ countries

Optimized for fast processing and scalable global trademark search.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com was built using just JavaScript and HTML—simple, fast, and with all processing happening locally in your browser, so no certificate data is sent to any server

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Demarka's answer

Startups and SMBs validating brand names before launch or market expansion.

Also used by: – creative and branding agencies validating names for clients
– trademark professionals automating initial screening
– e-commerce and digital businesses launching new brands

Common need: fast and reliable trademark validation without complexity.

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Demarka's answer

Most trademark tools show results. You’re left guessing.

Demarka gives you a clear answer.

– registrability verdict with probability
– risk and conflict explanation
– actionable recommendations

All in under 2 minutes, at a fraction of the cost of traditional checks.

Cert Decoder's answer:

Simple, fast, and reliable. Some similar tools can’t even decode basic certificates. I rigorously tested my tool with many real-world certificates and covered several edge cases where competitors fall short.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Cert Decoder's answer:

certdecoder.com is primarily built for developers, sysadmins, cybersecurity enthusiasts, and DevOps engineers.

What makes your product unique?

Demarka's answer

It combines trademark search, similarity analysis, and compliance checks to determine if a brand name can be registered, explain risks, and suggest improvements before filing.

Why? Because I built certdecoder.com and couldn’t find a decent place to submit it. So I said screw it — I’ll build my own. With blackjack and hookers. - Source: dev.to / over 1 year ago
