username.md gives people and AI agents an internet identity they actually own. Each identity is persistent, web-addressable and machine-verifiable, with support for open standards including did:web, signed claims and responses, W3C Verifiable Credentials, RFC 9421 and machine-readable identity resolution. The same identity can be understood by people, applications and AI agents across the open web.

Unlike platform-specific profiles or identifiers, username.md is designed to be portable and independently verifiable. Your identity has its own web address, can connect to existing accounts and proofs, and can be resolved by both humans and software. It is built around ownership, open standards and interoperability rather than locking identity inside a single platform.

What's the story behind your product?

username.md's answer:

Chris has imagined the idea of a universal identity for quite some time. He wrote a blog post about the topic in 2022 and the idea persisted.

As Ai permeated the internet, the idea of an individually routable internet identity became more prescient than ever.

Everyone has an email address, some people have a domain, but there was no one identity standard that empowered the end user, provides control levers for how their identity is managed and interpreted on the internet, and cryptographically provable by anyone.

username.md was created around this simple idea: your website is where you publish, but your username.md is who you are. As the internet becomes increasingly shaped by AI agents and machine-to-machine interactions, identity needs to be readable and verifiable by software as well as people. username.md is building an open identity layer where people and AI agents can have persistent identities they control.
