Code42 can be expensive, especially for small businesses or startups that may have limited IT budgets.
  • Bandwidth Consumption
Real-time backups can sometimes use significant bandwidth, potentially affecting other network activities if not managed properly.
  • Resource Intensive
The software can be resource-intensive, potentially slowing down older or less powerful systems during backup operations.
  • Complexity in Large Deployments
While scalable, large enterprise deployments may require significant time and expertise to set up and manage effectively.
  • Limited Mobile Support
Currently, Code42 offers limited functionality on mobile devices compared to its desktop application.

Cilium features and specs

  • Network Security
Cilium provides advanced network security policies with support for layer 7, enabling fine-grained security controls and deep packet inspection.
  • Scalability
Cilium is built to handle large-scale environments effectively, thanks to its efficient use of BPF (Berkeley Packet Filter) for high performance and scalability.
  • Integration with Kubernetes
Cilium seamlessly integrates with Kubernetes and other cloud-native technologies, providing smooth deployments and operations in modern cloud environments.
  • Observability
Cilium offers robust observability features with detailed metrics, monitoring, and tracing capabilities to help diagnose and troubleshoot network issues.
  • Identity-Aware Security
Unlike traditional network security, Cilium uses identity-based security to manage microservices communication, which enhances security posture.

Possible disadvantages of Cilium

  • Complexity
Setting up and managing Cilium can be complex, especially for those unfamiliar with eBPF or those who are new to Kubernetes and microservice architectures.
  • Resource Intensive
Cilium can be resource-intensive, as the use of BPF and other components might require more CPU and memory resources compared to simpler solutions.
  • Learning Curve
There is a learning curve associated with understanding the intricacies of Cilium, especially due to its use of advanced networking concepts like eBPF.
  • Limited Legacy Support
Cilium may have limited support for non-cloud-native or legacy environments, making it less suitable for organizations that haven't fully transitioned to microservices or containers.
  • Dependency on Kernel Features
As Cilium relies on modern Linux kernel capabilities, older systems with outdated kernels may not be fully compatible, necessitating updates or workarounds.

Code42 mentions (1)

  • Looking for the best cloud backup for all my files
It's not a big surprise, given that Code42 (the parent company) pretends they have nothing to do with Crashplan. They've done a massive pivot to some kind of security company, with ZERO references to the OG product of Crashplan on code42.com, which (I'm guessing) is the bulk of their revenue. If you do a site search on google, you'll find some old links, but they just push you over to crashplan.com. Source: about 4 years ago
