There's the worker bee model. You find a company dedicated to FOSS like Google, RedHat, Intel, etc., join them, and work your way into a position where you're maintaining something open source but salaried through your employer. Snip and tot are awesome... the first is free and uses githum gists to sync things, the second I love since it gives me a couple quick blocks to keep things on both mac and ios If you need more I was using CodeSpace to keep all my php, js, py scripts handy. Source: about 3 years ago
