Softorage is a directory and database of software that helps users find, evaluate and download software securely. Unlike traditional download portals that host installers on their own servers, Softorage redirects users to authoritative sources.

Key Features

Using any software directory involves an exchange of trust: you trust the platform to point you to genuine, official links. We donโ€™t take that responsibility lightly and we work hard to earn that trust. Softorage is based on the philosophy of "Trust, but verify."

  • Direct download from the source: We cut out middleman risks by sending you straight to the developer's website or (in a few cases) trustworthy third-party repositories. This ensures that you receive files exactly as the developer intended, without custom installers, injected toolbars or potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
  • Carefully Curated: We research and cross-check each listing to point to the official domains to help protect you from typosquatting, counterfeit sites and clone listings.
  • Verification Tools Built-in:
    • VirusTotal Integration: Before downloading, you can scan download page URLs or direct links with VirusTotalโ€™s threat intelligence engines to make sure the destination hasnโ€™t been flagged for malicious activity.
    • Cryptographic Checksums: We provide official SHA-256 hashes where available, allowing you to cryptographically verify the integrity of your downloaded file to ensure that it matches the original developer release.
  • Unbiased Insights: Get clear and factual, concise information about each utility, without any promotional sales pitches.

Open-Source Development

Softorage features and specs

  • Direct-to-Source Integrity
When software is downloaded via third-party platforms, there is a high risk of package manipulation, where intermediaries inject malware into the installer. Softorage mitigates this middleman risk by never hosting the files directly. Instead, we provide direct paths to the developer's official distribution channels. By prioritizing the authoritative source, we ensure you receive the software as the developer published it.
  • No Middleman Adware or Custom Installers
Because we link directly to the developer, you'll never be subjected to 'custom installers'. That means no injected toolbars, no middleman adware, and no potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) hidden inside third-party wrappers.
  • Verified Authenticity
Every software listing on Softorage is meticulously curated and cross-referenced to ensure it points to the genuine, official domain. This rigorous verification process protects you from typosquatting, counterfeit websites, and malicious clones, ensuring that every tool you discover is authentic and authoritative.
  • VirusTotal Integration
Security shouldn't rely on blind trust. Before you click download, Softorage lets you scan the exact Download Page URL or the Direct Download Link through VirusTotal. For Downloads Page, this allows you to check the domain reputation against dozens of top-tier security vendors, ensuring the delivery source isn't flagged for malicious activity. For Direct Download Links, this allows you to check the endpoint and file reputation against over 70 top-tier antivirus engines, ensuring the link is safe before a file ever touches your device.
  • Verification Ready
To defend against in-transit tampering or corrupted downloads, we provide official SHA-256 cryptographic hashes wherever possible. Once your download is complete, you can use these checksums to cryptographically prove that the file on your computer perfectly matches the developer's published release.
  • Unbiased & Reliable Information
We are committed to delivering clear, concise, and unbiased details about each software package - without the misleading sales pitches. After countless hours of research, we've built one of the most reliable and comprehensive resources available to help you make informed, stress-free digital choices.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing CNET and Softorage.

What makes your product unique?

Softorage's answer:

Whenever we download a software package hosted on third party servers, there is a risk of the package being tampered with. Such third-party downloads are one of the most used vectors by bad actors to spread malware.

Softorage differs in that it doesn't host any software but rather points the user to official developer websites. We understand that you are trusting Softorage to curate and point you to genuine, official links. We don't take that responsibility lightly, and we work hard to earn that trust. Some of the things we do in this effort include providing instant VirusTotal scans for URLs and files, and providing SHA-256 checksum for files. We keep improving our internal processes and are always open to suggestions.

  • Transfer a domain
Thank you for your response. I admit I was lazy at first. I got a dodgy feeling when I did a renewal for one domain in August 2022, but I figured I would move it before the next renewal. Now cis.net is telling me that I would be in breach of the hosting contract that I first "signed" when I signed up for hosting via a cnet.com promotion back in 2020. Supposedly the contract renews at the same terms and I am not... Source: about 3 years ago
  • Who in this group know DOS
I still use dos today. especially when diagnosing network issues. Need to know you router IP address? start / run / type cmd and then ipconfig. It displays your ip address and that of your default gateway (your router). Then simply run a ping to an outside source. I ping cnet.com as I know they will respond. You can run a tracert to cnet.com and it will show your time between hops and where the issue may be... Source: about 3 years ago
  • What is the best place to get unbiased news?
Another website I remember scoring well was CNET.com, which was random, but a bonus if you're into tech stuff. In addition to tech stuff (which is of course their main bread & butter), they'll cover things going on in the news (ex: legislation, Covid, world news) as big things come up. • Is a personal blog the best way to promote your Software Projects in 2022?
I wonder about this too...because of the competitiveness of getting eyeballs on the internet--you need 200,000 impressions/view per day with Google AdSense to your site to make around $70K / year--I tend to think that it is very difficult to get your blog viewed, given how much traffic-driven websites really need the views. Thus, you should probably try to use a downloadable software website like amazon.com or... Source: almost 4 years ago
