ClipGate is the only clipboard manager built CLI-first for developers who live in the shell, not the menubar. You drive it with the cg command (cg list, cg search, cg get --type secret), and a Chrome/Edge extension provides popup access to the same local vault when you need a GUI. Every copied item is auto-classified in real time into one of 10 content types — secrets, errors, SHA hashes, diffs, file paths, JSON, URLs, shell commands, plain text, and binaries — and API keys, OAuth tokens, database connection strings, and SSH keys are flagged before they can leak into a screenshot, a Slack thread, or an accidentally pasted commit. Nothing leaves your machine: no cloud backend, no account required, no telemetry, no analytics. The vault is a per-user SQLite database with owner-only (0600) permissions.

Most clipboard managers (Maccy, Ditto, CopyQ, Alfred Clipboard) treat all clipboard history as equivalent strings. ClipGate treats content by type, so secrets are handled differently from plain text — highlighted, grouped, and searchable separately. Second, ClipGate is the only clipboard tool in this category that's fundamentally terminal-native: cg works over SSH, inside tmux, on headless Linux boxes, and in CI debugging scenarios where a menubar icon is useless. Third, it's local-first by design — no cloud sync, no account, no "trust us" privacy policy to read. Fourth, the single-binary Rust CLI (4.6MB, 220+ tests passing) is lighter than any Electron-based competitor. And fifth, there's a Model Context Protocol server (cg mcp) that exposes the clipboard vault to Claude Code, Cursor, and other AI coding assistants, so your AI tools can read and reference past clipboard items as context.

Developers, DevOps engineers, SREs, and security researchers who spend most of their workday in a terminal. Specifically: people who SSH into production boxes and need to capture paste-able commands without losing them, developers who shuffle API keys and database URLs between staging and production and want a safety net against the moment they paste the wrong one, security researchers juggling dozens of tokens during engagements, and anyone who has ever searched their shell history for "that one command from Tuesday" and wished it extended to the clipboard. Secondary audience: AI-assisted developers using Claude Code, Cursor, or other agents who want a structured clipboard history their AI tools can query via MCP.

ClipGate started from a single bad moment: pasting a production database URL into the wrong chat window and spending the next hour rotating credentials. Every clipboard manager on the market stored it as an opaque string alongside every other copy — there was no layer between the clipboard and the paste that understood what kind of data it was. So the question became: what would a clipboard manager look like if it ran in the terminal, understood the difference between a JWT and a shell command, and refused to let secrets quietly age into forgotten history? The answer turned into ClipGate: a Rust CLI with type-aware classification and a local-first SQLite vault, built specifically for the shell-first workflow and later extended with a browser extension for GUI-friendly moments.

ClipGate is in early public release and does not publish a customer list. Installation and usage are anonymous by design (no telemetry, no account system), so there is no internal tracking to surface. Users include independent developers, security researchers, and small engineering teams who prefer clipboard tools that don't call home.
