Possible disadvantages of Tabula

  • Limited Functionality
Tabula is specifically designed for table extraction and, therefore, does not offer additional PDF manipulation features such as editing or annotation.
  • Complex Tables
While Tabula works well with simple tables, it may struggle with complex table structures, including nested tables or those with a lot of merged cells, resulting in less accurate extraction.
  • Resource Intensive
Extracting large volumes of data, especially from extensive PDF files, can be resource-intensive and may require significant processing power and memory.
  • No Built-in OCR
Tabula does not include Optical Character Recognition, limiting its ability to extract text from scanned PDFs where the tables are presented as images rather than actual text.
  • Dependency on Java
Tabula requires Java to be installed on the host machine, which might be a barrier for users who do not have it configured or prefer not to use it.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing CleanStmt and Tabula.

What makes your product unique?

CleanStmt's answer

CleanStmt is the only bank statement converter that guarantees zero merged cells. Most PDF converters output messy Excel files with merged headers and subtotals that break formulas and pivot tables. CleanStmt uses AI to extract transactions into clean, stable columnsโ€”every transaction in its own row with consistent Date, Description, Debit, and Credit structure. This makes it perfect for QuickBooks import and reconciliation workflows.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

CleanStmt's answer

Next.js 14, TypeScript, Claude Vision API (Anthropic AI for OCR), and React. Backend is serverless with in-memory processingโ€”no database, no file storage. Export libraries include docx for Word files and xlsx-js-style for Excel. Hosted on Vercel with 256-bit SSL encryption.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

CleanStmt's answer

Three reasons: (1) Zero merged cells guaranteeโ€”competitors like PDFTables and Tabula often output merged cells that break accounting workflows. (2) Six export formats including QuickBooks (QBO), OFX, QIF, and IIFโ€”not just Excel/CSV. (3) Privacy firstโ€”files process in-memory and auto-delete after one hour with no human access. Plus, no signup required and completely free to use.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

CleanStmt's answer

CleanStmt serves accountants, bookkeepers, small business owners, and freelancers who need to import bank statements into accounting software or analyze transactions in Excel. Our typical users are frustrated with manual retyping or messy converter outputs that break their reconciliation workflows. They value clean data structure over fancy features.

What's the story behind your product?

CleanStmt's answer

I built CleanStmt after spending hours manually retyping bank statement data into Excel during tax season. Every PDF converter I tried gave me merged cells that broke my formulas. I realized accountants don't need fancy featuresโ€”they just need clean, formula-friendly data. So I focused on one thing: zero merged cells, stable columns, every time. Launched in April 2026, and the feedback from CPAs has been incredibly positive.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

CleanStmt's answer

  • Accounting firms preparing tax documents
  • Small business bookkeepers doing monthly reconciliation
  • Freelancers organizing finances for 1099 filing
  • Real estate agents tracking rental income
  • E-commerce sellers importing transactions to QuickBooks

  • The surprisingly complex journey to text-selectable client-side generated PDFs
We have a couple of large customers who will only send remittance advices as a PDF, the are several pages and a couple of hundred rows. Apparently their system can not send XLSX or any other format. I've been a happy user of Tabula[1] for a few years and it works really well, for my needs anyway. I just import, auto-detect tables, select "Stream", and then export to a CSV. [1] https://tabula.technology/. - Source: Hacker News / 2 months ago

I have had to do some bank statements to CSV conversions before and still do occasionally and https://tabula.technology/ has been invaluable for this. In other news, any bank that does not produce a standard CSV file for their bank statements should be fined $1m per day until they do. It's ridiculous that this isn't the first option when you go to download them. - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago

For extracting to tables I've been using http://tabula.technology/ for a couple of years. It seems to do a pretty good job even with some fairly complex tables and I've not had any problems with it. - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
