Chester is named after a real dog, a shih-poo in Toronto, and that is not a mascot decision. It is a reminder of who the software is actually for.

Three things make it different in practice. It is genuinely mobile-first: the iOS and Android apps are native, because this work happens between appointments, outdoors, one-handed, and not always at a desk. It is dual-portal by architecture, so the pet owner's experience is a first-class surface built from the database up, rather than a client view retrofitted onto a provider tool. And Chester is not a marketplace. It takes no commission on your bookings and never puts itself between you and your clients.

Most software in this category was designed for a desk and for the previous decade. Chester was built for how the work actually happens: starting a visit, writing a report card, and sending an invoice are each designed to be finished on a phone in about a minute.

The commercial model is the clearest difference. There is no per-booking charge and no commission on your work. The only transaction fee is a flat 5% on card payments, and you decide whether the client covers it, you absorb it, or you split it up to a cap you set. Take cash, e-transfer or cheque, and there is no fee at all.

The other difference is the client portal. It is not a courtesy surface. It is what makes an independent professional look more organized than they could look on their own, and that is where referrals come from.

Independent pet care professionals: dog walkers, pet sitters, groomers, boarders and trainers. Typically somewhere between a solo operator and a small team of fifteen staff or contractors, running anywhere from ten to a hundred and fifty active clients. People who are past the spreadsheet stage and are losing evenings to admin they never signed up for.

The second audience is the pet owners who hire them. They use the client portal to book, message, approve invoices and read report cards, and they never pay Chester a subscription.

It started by watching the people who cared for him. They were excellent at the work and buried in everything around it: chasing invoices, retyping bookings into three places, doing the awkward follow-up about money. The tools available to them either took a cut of their work, assumed they were an enterprise, or assumed they were sitting at a computer rather than standing outside holding a leash.

So Chester was built in Toronto for those people specifically, mobile-first and free to start. The dog is still the reason the standard is what it is: if a feature would not make a real professional's day genuinely easier, it does not ship.
