I run virtual trainings, and the same thing kept happening: Iโd say, โSee you back in 15 minutes,โ and 18 minutes later Iโm still staring at a half-empty Teams meeting, unsure whether to start or keep waiting.
The problem isnโt that people are flaky. Itโs that once they step away from their desk, they lose their sense of time. Without a clock or coworkers heading back, itโs easy for a short break to run long.
So I built BreakNow.
You screen-share a countdown timer during breaks. Participants scan a QR code and see the timer on their phones. When timeโs almost up, they know and they return. No more awkward โI think most people are backโ moments.
Thereโs also an optional poll feature. Before the break, you can ask a quick question - an energy check, pace feedback, etc. Attendees respond from their phones, and when everyone returns, you see the results and can adjust on the fly.
What it does: - Countdown timer you screen-share during breaks - QR code so participants see the timer on their phones - Live polls for quick check-ins (optional) - Pause, resume, or add time - syncs to everyone automatically - Pre-set break types (coffee, lunch, lab time) or create your own
Who uses it: - Corporate trainers - Workshop facilitators - Conference organizers - Team leads running remote meetings
Free. No signup. Just go to breaknow.app and start a break.

BreakNow's answer
BreakNow is a professional break timer built specifically for virtual trainings, workshops, and meetings. Unlike generic countdown tools or simple alarms, itโs designed to keep everyone on the same schedule during live, virtual group sessions - with clear timing visible to participants so they know when a break starts and ends.
Key points: - Timer tailored for presenter-led virtual sessions rather than personal reminders. - Enables organized, predictable transitions between content and breaks. - Helps trainers and facilitators maintain audience engagement and pacing in distributed learning or meeting environments.
BreakNow's answer
When comparing BreakNow to general break/reminder timer apps or DIY approaches:
Built for group context Other timers (like single-user break reminders) focus on individual health or productivity. BreakNowโs value is in shared scheduling across a group during a structured session.
Improves meeting flow It gives a clear visual cue to the audience instead of relying on verbal cues or stopwatch features, making sessions feel more professional and synchronized.
Simplifies facilitation Instead of manually telling participants to โbreak now, back in 10 minโ, BreakNow gives an objective count that everyone can see and follow.
In contrast, many break tools are personal reminders (alerts on a device) rather than public countdown and scheduling tools.
BreakNow's answer
Primary users: - Virtual trainers and facilitators - Online workshop leaders - Corporate meeting hosts - Event organizers (especially virtual or hybrid events where break timing matters)
These are professionals who run scheduled sessions with groups and need to manage time transparently for participants.
BreakNow's answer
Iโm an instructor who runs a lot of virtual trainings and workshops. And the same thing kept happening over and over again.
Iโd say, โLetโs take a 10โ15 minute break,โ start a timer on my phone or watch the clockโฆ and when it was time to resume, half the group still wasnโt back. Iโd sit there wondering whether to start, wait, or awkwardly ask, โIs everyone back?โ
The problem wasnโt that people didnโt care. Once participants step away from their desks, they lose any sense of time. Thereโs no shared clock. No signal that the break is almost over. And in virtual sessions, there are no hallway cues or coworkers heading back to the room.
BreakNow came from scratching that exact itch.
I wanted a simple way to make break timing visible and shared, so everyone knows when to come back - without nagging, guessing, or breaking the flow of the session. Something purpose-built for instructors and facilitators, not another personal productivity timer.
So I built BreakNow: a tool designed from real teaching friction, to make virtual sessions smoother, more professional, and less awkward for both instructors and participants.
