  • Customizability
Users and developers can customize filters and AR experiences according to their specific needs or branding requirements, enhancing flexibility and personalization.
  • Improved Code Organization
Modular JavaScript allows developers to break down code into smaller, manageable modules. This enhances code readability and maintainability by organizing related functionality together.
  • Code Reusability
Modules encourage reusability by allowing the same piece of code to be used across different projects or multiple areas of the same application, reducing redundancy.
  • Scalability
As the application grows, managing code becomes easier with modular JavaScript. Each module can be developed, tested, and maintained independently, making the codebase more scalable.
  • Encapsulation
Modules provide encapsulation, preventing variables and functions from polluting the global namespace. This reduces the risk of naming conflicts and bugs.
  • Improved Testing
With code organized into discrete modules, writing unit tests becomes more straightforward. Each module can be tested individually, leading to more reliable and maintainable tests.

Possible disadvantages

  • Increased Complexity
Introducing modularity can add complexity to the build process, as it often requires module loaders or bundlers (like Webpack or Browserify) to manage dependencies.
  • Overhead
For smaller projects, using a modular approach might be overkill, introducing unnecessary overhead in terms of setup, configuration, and code management.
  • Learning Curve
Developers unfamiliar with modular JavaScript may face a learning curve, especially when dealing with module patterns, loaders, and bundlers.
  • Dependency Management
Relying on multiple modules can lead to complex dependency chains, making it challenging to track and resolve dependencies across different modules.
  • Performance Overhead
Modular JavaScript can introduce performance overhead if not managed properly, such as loading many small modules individually, leading to increased HTTP requests.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing Banuba - AR video camera and Modular JavaScript.

What makes your product unique?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

Face AR that actually performs in a browser. The engine is compiled to WebAssembly rather than being a cut-down web build, so a filter, a try-on or a background runs at native-level quality from a plain URL, with nothing installed and nothing to approve. Most AR vendors treat the web as a demo surface and keep the real capability in their mobile SDKs.

The second part is breadth on that same surface. Face filters, 3D masks, virtual try-on for makeup and eyewear, virtual backgrounds, hair recoloring, morphing and hand tracking are one engine and one license in the browser, instead of a different vendor per capability. Tracking underneath is a 3,308-vertex face mesh with 68 anchor points, holding through roughly 80 degrees of head rotation, 70% occlusion and up to 3.7 meters of distance.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

Three reasons that show up in evaluations. Distribution: a link or a QR code is the whole funnel, which is why web AR beats an app for campaigns, retail and one-off activations. Privacy: everything runs on the visitor's device, with no camera frames reaching our servers, which usually shortens a security review instead of opening one. Continuity: the same SDK ships natively for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, Unity, Flutter and React Native, so a web pilot that works can move into the product without a second vendor and a second integration.

Practically, it installs as an NPM package, average startup time is under an hour, effects are authored by your own team in Banuba Studio rather than requested from us, and AR Cloud publishes new ones without a release.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

Teams who need AR to reach people who will never install an app. Brands and agencies running web AR campaigns and activations, ecommerce sites putting try-on on a product page, browser-based video calling and webinar platforms, photo booth and event vendors, and beauty, eyewear and cosmetics retailers.

On the technical side the decision usually sits with a front-end or full-stack lead and a product manager, not a computer vision team. That is the point of the web path: the people building it are web developers, and the SDK is an NPM package they already know how to add.

What's the story behind your product?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

Banuba has been building face tracking since 2016, first as a native SDK for mobile apps. The web came later and against the assumption of the time, which was that a browser could not hold real-time face tracking at a usable frame rate. Compiling the engine to WebAssembly is what made it possible, and it turned into the capability the company is now chosen for most often when the requirement is "it has to work without an install".

What followed came from the same instinct to remove steps: Banuba Studio so customers author their own effects without a 3D team, AR Cloud so a new effect does not wait for a release, and agent skills so an AI coding assistant can do the integration. Banuba sells only to other companies, has never shipped a consumer app competing with its clients, and has been independent since a management buyout in 2022.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

Proprietary computer vision built in house: neural networks for face detection, tracking and segmentation, a 3,308-vertex 3D face mesh with 68 anchor points and 37 morph targets, plus background segmentation and hand and gesture models. Inference runs on the user's device.

On the web the engine is compiled to WebAssembly and distributed as the @banuba/webar NPM package, rendering through WebGL 2.0 in Chrome, Firefox and Safari. Native builds use the same core: C++ on Windows and macOS, native SDKs on iOS and Android, plus Unity, Flutter and React Native. Effects are authored in Banuba Studio and can be hosted in AR Cloud for on-demand delivery.

Who are some of the biggest customers of your product?

Banuba - AR video camera's answer

More than 120 companies use Banuba AR technology, including RingCentral, Samsung, Logitech, Gucci, Vidyo, Airmeet and Schwarzkopf.

Published results across the AR product line:

  • Bermuda, video chat and dating: 20 million installs, over 4 billion matches, 15 million Banuba feature launches per month.
  • b.stage, K-pop fandom platform: 1 million monthly active users across 224 countries in two years.
  • VROOM, video conferencing: monthly active users up 30%, registered users up 54% after adding virtual backgrounds and beauty mode.
