I have been working on cassette and open reel decks recently and I use a Behringer UCA usb audio interface with line out and line in RCAs, and AUDMes. It can generate tones, measure frequency response, analyze spectrum etc. For more detailed measurments I also have a usb oscilloscope, as that is more useful for exact level adjustment.
