While the use of .env file might be the common way of hiding secret during development we tend to not discover that it doesn't scale also doesn't improve our codebase security using an enhance tool like Onboardbase which I would recommend would be a better and more improved option for storing and sharing secrets. - Source: dev.to / about 4 years ago
