Lets roll back 20 years to 2002. We looked after PC's running 2000 and XP. A couple of servers, Exchange 5.5/2000, maybe venturing onto a server for File storage and a few app servers. To some extent it extends the concept of tasks which only can be reasonably executed after the completion of other ones (though results of branches eventually may join each other) and offers an additional assisting birds' eye visual of projects. There is also taskjuggler (https://taskjuggler.org), a text-based project mgmt that does track such resources (work time, vacations, shifts) and let you do reporting. There is some integration with emacs and org-mode as well (https://orgmode.org/worg/exporters/taskjuggler/ox-taskjuggler.html), in the way that you can export to taskjuggler and run the tool to validate things.
