Apache Karaf with OSGi works pretty nice using annotation based dependency injection with the declarative services, removing the need to mess with those hopefully archaic XML blueprints. Too bad it's not as trendy as spring and the developers so many of the tutorials can be a bit dated and hard to find. These are all features that the exercise.com should offer...... But they don't. Source: almost 4 years ago
It doesn't seem that severe tbh. They payed quite some cash for him to come work for them at exercise.com, another website they were developing at the time and he dropped out after 9 months to work full-time on Lichess. Some grudges were held but this was not about either website and it was a long time ago. Source: over 4 years ago
In short: Erik Allebest hired me to work on exercise.com, after I had started working on Lichess. I never had access to any code or intel from chess.com. I left exercise.com to work for startups unrelated to chess for 6 years, before Lichess hired me as full-time dev. Source: over 5 years ago
