Possible disadvantages

  • Smaller Community and Ecosystem
Compared to major hosting providers like DigitalOcean, AWS, or even shared hosts like SiteGround, Opalstack has a smaller user base, which means fewer community tutorials, third-party guides, and forum discussions available for troubleshooting.
  • Limited Scalability Options
Opalstack is primarily a shared hosting provider, which means it may not be the best choice for high-traffic applications or projects that require rapid, on-demand scaling of resources like CPU, RAM, or storage.
  • Not Ideal for Beginners
While developer-friendly, Opalstack's approach can be intimidating for non-technical users. Setting up applications often requires familiarity with the command line and server configuration, which may not suit those looking for simple one-click solutions.
  • Limited Data Center Locations
Opalstack offers a relatively small number of data center locations compared to major cloud providers, which may result in higher latency for users targeting audiences in regions not well-served by the available server locations.
  • Fewer Managed Services and Add-ons
Unlike larger hosting platforms, Opalstack lacks a wide range of managed add-on services such as built-in CDN integration, managed backups with granular restore options, or one-click SSL management that more mainstream providers offer out of the box.

Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing AltScent.app and Opalstack.

Why should a person choose your product over its competitors?

AltScent.app's answer

Most fragrance sites are databases or communities — great for research, but you have to dig through forum threads to find dupes, and they rarely tell you where to buy them. Subscription services solve the price problem but lock you into their catalog. AltScent is free, needs no account, and does the whole job in one place: ranked scent matches, per-phase similarity scores, performance metrics, and live prices from real retailers across the US, UK and EU. Matches are also community-checked — users vote on every suggestion, and poorly rated ones are automatically regenerated.

Which are the primary technologies used for building your product?

AltScent.app's answer

TypeScript end to end: React Native with Expo for the cross-platform app (web, iOS, Android), Supabase (Postgres + Edge Functions) for the backend, and LLM-driven scent-profile analysis with schema-validated output for generating and refreshing the matches. The web layer is edge-rendered on Cloudflare.

What makes your product unique?

AltScent.app's answer

AltScent doesn't just list perfumes — it answers one specific question: "what smells like this, for less?" For any of 130,000+ fragrances it returns the 5 closest scent matches with a transparent breakdown: how similar the opening and the dry-down are, how the longevity, projection and sillage compare, and a plain-language explanation of why each match works. Matches link straight to retailer prices in your region, so you can go from "I love Dior Sauvage" to a $25 bottle at checkout in under a minute.

How would you describe the primary audience of your product?

AltScent.app's answer

Fragrance lovers who want designer or niche scents without designer prices: students and budget-conscious buyers looking for affordable everyday alternatives, fragrance enthusiasts exploring "clone houses" and inspired-by releases, and gift buyers who know what someone wears and want a wallet-friendly match. It also works in reverse — people who own a budget scent and want to discover the premium fragrance it echoes.

What's the story behind your product?

AltScent.app's answer

The inspired-by fragrance market exploded, but finding a genuinely good match still meant hours in forum threads with contradictory opinions. AltScent was built solo — from company formation to launch in under two months — to turn that research into a single search: pick a perfume, get the five closest matches with honest similarity scores and real prices. It launched in 2026 in 8 languages, with iOS and Android apps following the web release.
