SubgroveSubgrove's answer:
Subgrove started with a question I couldn't get a good answer to: why does an app need my bank login to show me a list I could write on an index card? The tracker I wanted didn't exist, so I built it. No bank connection, no data to sell, no app store โ it installs from the browser and works on whatever phone you happen to own. And a one-time price, because I wasn't going to ship a subscription that tracks your subscriptions.
Subgrove's answer:
Subgrove never asks for your bank. Almost every subscription tracker opens by connecting your account through an aggregator like Plaid, which reads your entire transaction feed to find a dozen recurring charges. Subgrove skips that: you enter subscriptions yourself. There's no bank credential to leak, no transaction history to monetise, and no geographic lock-out โ bank-linked apps only work where their banking rails reach (Rocket Money, for instance, is US-only by its own documentation). It's also a PWA, so a single install works on iPhone, Android and desktop, and it works offline.
Subgrove's answer:
Three reasons. Privacy by architecture โ there's no bank connection to trust, because there isn't one. It works everywhere โ no country restriction and multi-currency support, so USD and GBP subscriptions don't quietly misreport your total. It's genuinely cross-platform โ most polished trackers are one platform only (Bobby is iOS-only, Subby is Android-only), which makes them useless for a mixed-device household; Subgrove is the same app on both. Pricing is $1.99/month, $10/year, or $15 once for lifetime โ not another subscription to track your subscriptions.
Subgrove's answer:
People who want to track subscriptions without handing a fintech app live access to their bank account. In practice that's four overlapping groups: privacy-conscious users who refuse Plaid; people outside the US locked out of Rocket Money and similar apps; mixed-device households and couples where one person has an iPhone and the other Android; and people with subscriptions in multiple currencies โ expats, freelancers with foreign clients โ whose real monthly total drifts with the exchange rate.
Subgrove's answer:
Next.js 16 (App Router) with React 19 and TypeScript. Tailwind CSS 4. SQLite via better-sqlite3. Stripe for payments, Web Push (VAPID) for renewal notifications. Delivered as a PWA with an offline service worker, self-hosted in Docker behind nginx.
