• Ear fatigue/sensitivity after mixing in headphones for a long time

  This isn’t a solution or a replacement for the other advice (and I don’t mean to shill), but I’ve found that CanOpener by Goodhertz helps to alleviate some of the fatigue when mixing with headphones. It seems like the “soft start” feature is the part that helps. I’m sure you could recreate it with a noise gate or something, I think basically it just helps by softening the transients a bit. • It’s focal time. First upgrade since buying the HD600’s a few years ago.

  For my part, I found the Clear's soundstage to benefit a fair amount from this crossfeed VST plugin. It's fairly expensive but has a long trial period. I found that the forward depth and the realism of the imaging were much improved if I set the crossfeed amount to about 60% and the angle to about 75%. Source: almost 4 years ago

  First, tried CanOpener to apply some crossfeed, and I really liked the result (if used with caution): it really gives you a sense of space and reality to your listen without altering it too much. I also tried Sienna, the free version, but I found that the room simulations altered too much the nature of what I was hearing: I probably need to study more the plugin, and try the version with more emulations.   Regarding the “hard panned” 60s stereo mixes, I strongly recommend using a crossfeed plugin. It makes a world of difference for recreating the sound of listening to a recording through speakers.   Goodhertz can opener (45$) introduces cross feed - left channel information into your right channel and vice versa - into your headphones. Using headphones and mixing is difficult because each side is completely isolated from each-other, fucking up your stereo image.
