Https://blokada.org/ Blokada 5 is free. It blocks ads and trackers system wide. It works in all games and apps I checked for the last 4-5 years. Used to work with YouTube as well, but not any more. I use New Pipe for that. You're experience may vary depending on block lists you subscribe to, but vanilla set up is already quite good. - Source: Hacker News / 6 months ago

You can read about Blokada here https://blokada.org/ and their v6 will also be in your App/Playstore but as said is subscription only. Lucky Android users can keep scrolling down until you see v5 offered which is completely free (not in Playstore btw). Unfortunately v5 isn't available for iOS. It works though, you won't see another, just a blackout timer that runs for 35 seconds (which does also mean you wait 35... Source: about 3 years ago

If that would make the game more palatable go to https://blokada.org/ and scroll all the way down to the bottom where you'll find Blokada 5 for Android. Summary of the public mentions of Blokada

Blokada, an open-source application designed to block ads and enhance privacy on mobile devices, continues to garner diverse user reactions. The landscape of ad-blocking software is highly competitive, with key players like AdGuard, Pi-hole, and uBlock Origin actively vying for user preference. However, Blokada distinguishes itself by offering a robust, on-device ad-blocking service with free and subscription-based options.

Public Opinion Highlights

Android Advantage

A significant portion of user feedback highlights Blokada's effectiveness on Android devices. Users consistently praise Blokada 5 for being a reliable, free, system-wide ad blocker, pointing out its availability outside the Play Store due to restrictions on VPN-based ad blockers. This version allows for DNS-based ad-blocking without subscription fees, making it particularly attractive for users wanting a cost-effective solution. Its open-source nature is another appealing factor, allowing tech-savvy users to modify and contribute to its development.

iOS Limitations

Blokada 6 is the only version available for iOS users and is presented as a cloud-based subscription service. This limitation has led to mixed reviews, as some users express dissatisfaction with the necessity of a subscription for iOS devices. The shift from a free-to-use model in version 5 to a premium service in version 6 is a point of contention among users, especially those who favor free and open-source solutions.

User Experience & Accessibility

Many users commend Blokada for its user-friendly interface and ease of installation. However, they note that Blokada 5 requires manual installation from the official website, which may pose a barrier for less technically inclined users. Additionally, the countdown timer during ad-blocking activities is often mentioned, with opinions divided on its utility versus inconvenience. Nonetheless, the app's accessibility through platforms like F-Droid and the Galaxy Store is praised for enabling easy access despite Google Play Store restrictions.

Performance & Reliability

Blokada's performance in blocking ads across various apps and browsers receives positive remarks. It is frequently compared to other top-tier ad blockers such as AdGuard and uBlock Origin, with users appreciating its ability to operate without root access. The robust DNS blocking mechanism is noted for effectively reducing ad clutter during browsing or app usage, although some users encountered limitations with specific apps that might circumvent ad-blocking measures.

Competitive Edge

Despite the competitive landscape, Blokada holds its ground by catering effectively to mobile users who prioritize privacy and ad-blocking. It offers a compelling alternative to Google Play and App Store offerings, meeting the needs of users seeking a balance between functionality and cost. Reviews often position it favorably against full-system solutions like Pi-hole and browser-centric options like uBlock Origin, highlighting its versatility in working across mobile environments.

Conclusion

Overall, Blokada maintains a favorable position within the ad-blocking ecosystem, primarily among Android users. While Blokada 6's subscription model is less popular among those accustomed to the free Blokada 5 experience, its comprehensive functionality for blocking ads and maintaining user privacy still makes it a preferred choice for many. As mobile ad-blocking remains a complex challenge, Blokadaโ€™s commitment to privacy and open-source development suggests it will continue to be a vital tool for users seeking control over their digital environments.
