Once I found this site (bikemap.net - free to use), I completely rebuilt my commute which added around 8 KM (5 miles) to the commute but was MUCH MUCH safer. bikemap recommended a lot of side streets in areas where there are no trails. As for planning, I use bikemap.net, they are incredible in Europe at least. It does planning amazingly well, and navigation pretty well.
