  • Financially illiterate
If you want a less frightening way to invest, betterment.com was my gateway into investing. It has a pre-selected basket of index funds and bonds, and you can just select your risk tolerance, set up a deposit schedule, and they take care of the rest. I started with $10/paycheck 11 years ago, and now I have almost $20,000 invested as I kept increasing my automated deposits as my salary grew. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Weekly note about a direct competitor outdoing M1+
Also about Betterment: they too started offering crypto at exactly the wrong time, but unlike M1 they have the decency to hide it from view! If I go to betterment.com now, I don't see any reference to crypto on the main page unless you scroll all the way down to the site map at the bottom. That's something else that M1+ could offer:. • Moving out at 18, no idea how to be an adult.
Lastly sign up for a free investment app like acorns, betterment.com, robin hood etc. Once you've got your budget setup dump everything else into those when combined with your credit card buffer you can always pull back out or preferrably reduce next months investments if you find yourself low on funds one month. There are muuuuuuch better options today that Edward Jones. Your "local guy" makes a living adding maintenance costs to your account. • Purchasing power of one US dollar (USD) in every year from 1635 to 2020
    > I could not disagree more. For much of human history, and most of American history, saving currency was exactly how you saved value. For much of human history we pooped in the street and murdered each other with reckless abandon. That may have been how we did things in the past, but there's no reason to couple a medium of exchange (short term) and a store of value (long term). Summary of the public mentions of Betterment

Betterment, a leading player in the realm of online financial services, has garnered a significant amount of public attention and diverse opinions owing to its innovative approach to investment management. As a digital-native, goal-centric investment platform, Betterment epitomizes the modern shift towards robo-advisors, designed to democratize financial planning and investment through technology-driven solutions.

Key Public Sentiments and Perceptions:

  1. Accessibility and Ease of Use: One of the most frequently lauded features of Betterment is its user-friendly interface that simplifies investment processes for novices and seasoned investors alike. Many users highlight Betterment as an ideal entry point into investing, citing its intuitive design where investors can easily set risk preferences and automate deposit schedules. This simplicity is a recurrent theme, underscored by accounts of users who started modestly and gradually increased their investments, exemplifying its accessibility for beginners.

  2. Competitive Advantage: Betterment is often touted as a preferable alternative to traditional financial advisors, largely due to its cost-effectiveness and transparency in fees. The platform's automated wealth management solutions eliminate hidden fees often associated with human advisors, allowing users to retain more of their investment returns. This efficiency is frequently contrasted against the conventional commission-based advisory models, encouraging users to pursue self-managed financial growth through Betterment.

  3. Innovative Features: The platform offers a suite of innovative features, including tax-loss harvesting and a diversified portfolio strategy, which resonates well with users seeking comprehensive management of their investment strategies. Additionally, Betterment has been recognized for its strategic extension into 401(k) services for small and medium-sized businesses, indicating its vision for expansive growth and adaptability in meeting varied financial needs.

  4. Challenges and Limitations: Despite its strengths, Betterment is not without criticism. Limitations such as geographical restrictionsโ€”being available only to U.S. citizens or Green Card holders, with limited exceptionsโ€”restrict its global accessibility. Users outside the U.S. have expressed dissatisfaction due to this lack of availability. Furthermore, criticisms regarding the timing of their entry into cryptocurrency offerings suggest a cautious approach from Betterment, deliberately keeping crypto less visible on their platform.

  5. Reputation and Trust: Betterment's approach to balancing innovation with prudent financial governance has earned it a combination of trust and respect within the investor community. By emphasizing stability and risk management, it maintains a positive reputation even amidst the volatile shifts in the financial landscape, such as cryptocurrency.

Conclusion:

Public opinion on Betterment underscores its role as a transformative agent in the investment management industry. Its ease of use, cost-effectiveness, and the innovative feature set make it an attractive option for a diverse array of investors, from beginners to those seeking more sophisticated financial tools. Nevertheless, its current geographical limitations suggest potential growth opportunities for broader market penetration. As the platform evolves, Betterment's ability to maintain its trusted advisor status while exploring new financial solutions will likely dictate its continued success and public perception.
