1. What's the story behind BeepSweep?

   BeepSweep exists because of the gap between being called and knowing why.

   Voicemail has been the standard answer to that for decades, and almost nobody uses it any more: callers hang up on the beep, and the people who do leave a message only say "call me back". You end up with a name and a number and no idea whether it can wait.

   So we started at that specific problem rather than at "answer the phone with AI". First: make the missed call readable. Then, for people who want more, let the AI actually take the call.

   Built in the Netherlands by Basinc bv in Dongen. The free tier, the AI receptionist, live transfer and calendar booking are all live, and the paid plans can be bought.

2. Why should a person choose BeepSweep over its competitors?

   Honest answer: not always, and it depends on what you actually need.

   • You get a handful of calls a week. BeepSweep fits, because there is a genuinely free tier and no per-call charges on any plan. Tools priced per minute get expensive fast when callers take their time.
   • You want to try before committing. Free plan, 15 messages a month, no credit card, about two minutes to set up.
   • You care where the data sits. Hosted in Amsterdam, AES-256 encrypted, never used to train models.
   • You want the phone answered without changing anything for callers. Your number stays yours; there is no new number to hand out.

   Where others fit better: if you need deep call-centre routing, CRM automation at scale, or a fully custom voice agent, pick a platform built for that.

3. Which are the primary technologies used for building BeepSweep?

   Two separate systems with a signed link between them.

   The app runs on Node.js with Express, server-rendered Nunjucks templates and Postgres. The front end is plain JavaScript with no bundler, plus a service worker for push notifications and offline use.

   The call engine runs on Python with FastAPI, built on pipecat, and uses OpenAI's gpt-realtime for speech to speech. There is no separate speech recognition and speech synthesis step in between. Telephony runs over Telnyx with TeXML, audio in G.722 wideband.

   Between the two sits an HTTP link signed with HMAC-SHA256 in the Stripe style. The call engine posts conversations and events to the app and pulls its configuration and routing from there.

   Hosting is in Amsterdam on Fly.io. Sensitive fields such as summaries, transcripts, phone numbers and keys are encrypted in the database with AES-256-GCM.

4. What makes BeepSweep unique?

   Most tools in this category start at the phone being answered. BeepSweep starts one step earlier: at the call you didn't take.

   Turn on conditional call forwarding and every unanswered call comes back to you as readable text: a one-sentence summary, the details pulled out, the full transcript, the original audio and a draft reply. That part is free, and it works without an AI ever speaking to your caller.

   The AI receptionist is a layer you switch on when you want it, not the starting point. Two things follow from that: you keep your own number, and nothing changes for the people calling you.

5. How would you describe the primary audience of BeepSweep?

   People whose phone rings more often than they can answer it: solo entrepreneurs, freelancers and small teams working from a shared number.

   It isn't tied to one industry. What these users have in common is a situation rather than a job title: they can't sit by the phone, and a missed call costs them something real. That shows up in construction and trades as much as in law firms, clinics, salons and estate agencies.

   The free plan is mostly used by individuals who want missed calls as readable text. The paid plans are used by small businesses that want calls genuinely answered instead of sent to voicemail.

   It is not built for call centres or for teams that need heavy CRM automation.
