If you have a use case that affords any kind of budget, maybe consder Azure Files. It is an SMB share you access over the internet. Basically, windows file server but hardened and entirely managed by Microsoft. This is as hands-off as it gets for an SMB share. Source: almost 2 years ago

If you're deploying applications to the cloud, you'll need persistent data storage. Azure Blob Storage allows scalable storage for objects and files and provides an SDK to easily access them. If you need/want file shares use those instead. Sharepoint is a decent document collaboration system, but does not work really well as a mapped drive alternative. Microsoft has seemed to recognize this, and released Azure Files as an alternative just for this purpose. If you want something on-premise a Synology box can provide a lot of storage for cheap. You can sync SharePoint to the users file explorer with instructions here. If you are looking for something more like a file server in the cloud you may want to look towards Azure Files. We typically set up and sync Sharepoint for shared files and set up Known Folder Migration for user's personal files with our customers. Source: almost 4 years ago

While SharePoint is great - based on everything you've said - it sounds like u literally want to store files, as is in the cloud. If so.. Then Azure files can do that, it's made for enterprises. SharePoint is a content management system, not a file share. Source: almost 4 years ago
