  • Iโ€™ve just got a data engineering from BI developer role by transferring internally and Iโ€™m struggling
A quick tip for airflow if you don't have a local install (and I heartily recommend a local install - astronomer.io has an easy to set up container). Source: over 3 years ago
  • Farnance: How Julian built a SaaS for farmers with Wasp and won a hackathon!
Julian LaNeve is an engineer and data scientist who currently works at Astronomer.io as a Product Manager. In his free time, he enjoys playing poker, chess and winning data science competitions. - Source: dev.to / over 3 years ago
  • I am looking for a roadmap on getting into Data Engineering. I can't hope to follow the popular roadmap shared on this sub.
Then load up docker, don't need to be a docker expert, just install docker desktop on windows or use linux. Go to astronomer.io and look at how to run airflow (cron++) in docker. Get that working. If you don't know python but do program in some language, you should be able to get up to speed on the basics pretty quickly. If you know python, it will be a breeze. • Finding the right workflow orchestration tool
Hello guys, I am currently looking for the right orchestration to build a data pipeline composed of long running tasks (python scripts) among which some run in parallel. Although I was firstly hesitating between Apache Airflow and AWS Step functions, it appeared setting Airflow for production might be too complicated without using a way too expensive service meant for that intent( aws managed worflows or... Summary of the public mentions of Astronomer

Public Opinion Summary on Astronomer

Astronomer is widely regarded as a robust platform that offers seamless integration and enhancement of Apache Airflow capabilities, placing it firmly within the realms of workflow automation, analytics, and orchestration. Within the competitive landscape, which includes notable names such as Kestra.io, Dagster, Prefect.io, n8n.io, Make.com, and AWS Step Functions, Astronomer is acknowledged for its specialization in Apache Airflow, providing users with a streamlined and efficient way to manage data pipelines without the need to handle underlying infrastructure directly.

Integration with Apache Airflow

Many users appreciate Astronomer's role as a facilitator for Apache Airflow, as highlighted in articles emphasizing its capacity to enhance and simplify Airflow integration. It enables organizations and individuals to leverage Apache Airflow's extensive capabilities in designing and executing data pipelines without being overwhelmed by infrastructure management. This attribute is particularly appealing to those who wish to enjoy the benefits of Airflow without the steep learning curve associated with infrastructure setup.

Ease of Use and Setup

Astronomer is often praised for its user-friendly setup process, particularly for local installations. This ease of onboarding is evident in user-generated content where it is frequently recommended for setting up local environments quickly, often using Docker containers. This accessibility makes it an attractive option for both aspiring data engineers and seasoned developers transitioning into roles requiring data pipeline management.

Community and Developer Advocacy

The platform also benefits from strong advocacy within the developer and data science communities. This is exemplified by the presence of prominent data scientists, such as Julian LaNeve, who contribute to the platform's credibility and visibility in the industry. Such individuals not only reinforce the technical robustness of Astronomer but also help cultivate a community of practice that is essential for continuous learning and innovation.

Cost and Complexity Considerations

While Astronomer offers a significant competitive advantage in terms of functionality and integration, some discussions highlight concerns regarding the cost implications and perceived complexity of production setups. There is a sentiment that achieving a production-ready environment using Astronomer or AWS-managed workflows for Apache Airflow can be expensive, which might deter smaller enterprises or individual users with budget constraints. Alternatives such as Luigi and Azkaban are sometimes explored by users seeking similar orchestration capacities at possibly lower costs.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Astronomer is perceived positively as a powerful, user-friendly platform that streamlines the integration with Apache Airflow, thus enhancing automation and analytics workflows. Its ease of setup, robust community engagement, and enhanced functionality for managing complex data pipelines make it a standout choice among Airflow alternatives. Nonetheless, potential users must carefully weigh the platform's advantages against potential cost implications, especially when scaling to production environments.
