Questions & Answers

As answered by people managing AlarmBee.
  1. Which are the primary technologies used for building AlarmBee?

    • Python and FastAPI on the backend
    • Microsoft SQL Server
    • Progressive web apps for the child and parent interfaces
    • Flutter for the native Android application, with iOS in development
    • Firebase Cloud Messaging for push delivery
    • IIS with Application Request Routing, behind Cloudflare
  2. What makes AlarmBee unique?

The data flow is one-directional. Information travels from the child to the parents and never in the opposite direction. There is no messaging back to the child, and parents cannot request a location on demand โ€” a position is transmitted only at the moment the child presses the button.

That was a design decision, not a technical limitation. A safety tool should not quietly become a surveillance tool.

The second thing is what a single press actually delivers: a siren on every parent device at once, GPS location with a map link, photos captured automatically from both cameras, battery level and network status โ€” plus the same information by email, so it arrives even if an app fails.

  3. What's the story behind AlarmBee?

It started as a private system for one family โ€” a panic button on a child's phone, running on a home server. The interesting part was not the alert itself but what arrived with it: knowing where, seeing what the cameras saw, and knowing how much battery was left to work with.

Turning that into a product surfaced problems no prototype reveals. Google Family Link blocks progressive web app installation on supervised child accounts. A siren cannot sound from a closed web app on any platform. Both pushed the project towards native applications alongside the web version.

The name comes from how a beehive behaves: when one bee senses danger, the whole colony is alerted at once and moves to protect what matters most.

  4. Why should a person choose AlarmBee over its competitors?

Most alternatives are tracking platforms with an SOS feature attached. AlarmBee is the opposite: an alert tool with no tracking at all. Parents who are uncomfortable monitoring their child's movements, and older children who resist being tracked, tend to accept it for exactly that reason.

It also works where others break. On supervised child accounts, Google Family Link stops Chrome from installing a progressive web app and restricts the camera and location permissions a panic button needs โ€” the native Android app is built around that problem.

Pricing is one flat annual fee covering unlimited children and unlimited parents, rather than per-child or per-seat.

  5. How would you describe the primary audience of AlarmBee?

Parents of children roughly 8 to 16 โ€” the years when a child starts moving around alone but is not yet fully independent. Both parents receive the same alert simultaneously, so it fits two-parent and separated-parent households equally.

Because setup is a single shared family code, the same mechanism extends well beyond that: teachers running school trips abroad, students living away from home, adult children looking after an elderly parent with a health condition, and lone workers such as night security staff, delivery drivers and home care nurses.
