To add to this, there's also Logseq, an alternative open source client that works like a charm! I personally didn't use Obsidian very much, but Logseq can work from locally from browser if you don't want to install it and it has the auto-commit functionality you can toggle in the settings if you are working inside a repository, super useful.

When writing a paper with multiple authors I preferred to use something like overleaf (overleaf.com), it includes a history and you can export it to GitHub or add it to your own tracking by downloading the files themselves.
