Best way to browse your videos

I created this software because there was no good alternative. If you want to see what videos you have on an external hard drive, and you want to see screenshots from within the video, this software has you covered.

It now has over 900 purchases, so seems like other people like it too.

  • Ask HN: How did you earn your first $100 and first $1k online?
First $100: Thirty copies sold of Video Hub App First $1,000: Three hundred copies sold of my Video Hub App https://videohubapp.com/ Though I do donate $3.50 of every sale to a cost-effective charity so in theory I made no money for a while until I bumped the price to $5 / copy. - Source: Hacker News / 10 months ago
  • Jellyfin: The Free Software Media System
Semi-on-topic: I created Video Hub App that is like YouTube for local files: shows you a gallery with scrub-able (preview on hover) thumbnails. But does not work streaming videos to TV / tablet - only for local consumption. Hope someone finds it useful. https://videohubapp.com/ MIT Open Source: https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
  • Python GUIs
"The problem" might be that people in this thread and others get frustrated because others have different goals than them. Of course Electron is overkill for a single-button application. But Visual Basic is absolutely going to be a headache if you want a custom GUI. Pick the tool that's right for the job! I build this with Electron: https://videohubapp.com/. - Source: Hacker News / 11 months ago
  • I've been data hoarding for 25 years. I have a bajillion hobbies. It's hard to stay organized.
I created Video Hub App: https://videohubapp.com/ - it shows screenshots from videos as you scrub/hover across the thumbnail. Source: about 1 year ago
  • FFmpeg 6.0
I've been so frustrated that FFprobe functionality is not part of FFmpeg. My app extracts screenshots from videos to create a beautiful gallery of videos. But even though I include FFmpeg already, I need a 50mb FFprobe executable to be bundled with my app just so that I can determine the width, height, duration, and fps of a video file! What is it that FFprobe does that FFmpeg couldn't do with a few extra pieces... - Source: Hacker News / about 1 year ago
  • Those making $500/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
Created Video Hub App (that will be 5 years old next month). I sell it for $5 and $3.50 of each purchase goes to the cost-effective charity Against Malaria Foundation (See GiveWell.org for details). It was averaging around 100 purchases per month, though it's lower over the last year as I've not had time to release new updates (moving to another state is challenging).... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: What is the most impactful thing you've ever built?
Built Video Hub App that almost 5,000 people have purchased. I was a math teacher, became a web dev 6 years ago, built this 5 years ago. Most proceeds go to charity. Very minor by comparison to others, but I'm just starting out ;) https://videohubapp.com/ && https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App What I did that is most impactful is that I've been giving at least 10% of my income to... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: What's a good business model for selling standalone software
My personal model for my commercial software: charityware - require a payment but made most proceeds go to my favorite (cost-effective) charity. I'm getting about 100 purchases ($500/month, donating $350 of that) with my Video Hub App - https://videohubapp.com/ - which is also open source - https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App I wrote about charityware a few years ago:... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Ask HN: Alternative ways to make money with coding and system skills?
I have mild success at $500/month by selling my $5 Video Hub App (though I donate $3.50 of every purchase to a cost-effective charity). This is averaging 100 sales per month for several years now. https://videohubapp.com/ - though I also have it open source: https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • From Plex to Jellyfin Media Server
An open-source (and charityware) software I wrote: Video Hub App - shows screenshots from inside each video as you scroll across the thumbnail (scrub). I didn't like the interface of various video browsers / launchers - perhaps others will find what I created to their taste: https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App https://videohubapp.com/. - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • How do u guys organize porn.
Try Video Hub App - https://videohubapp.com/ - shows screenshots from within the video as you hover over it. Source: over 1 year ago
  • Ever wondered how a QR code works?
I ended up using a QR code in my (Electron) app: the app runs a server, and you take a photo of the QR code on your phone to open the localhost (accessible only over WiFi). The app lets you browse videos you have on your computer through your phone, and when you click on the video image, the video plays on your computer from the frame you clicked on. It turns your phone into a "remote". Cheers:... - Source: Hacker News / over 1 year ago
  • Becoming a Full-Time Creator as a Software Engineer
I created Video Hub App and sell about 100 copies at $5 each (originally for $3.50 four years ago at launch). Had no audience, just shared it on Reddit a bit, on some forums, AlternativeTo, and a few random places (never paid). Sold over 4,000 copies in the last 4 years - probably with help of luck (some people wrote reviews of the app) and also probably because people search for "porn hub" as "video hub".... - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Tell HN: I made $1000 with my app and now making $500/mo
Thank you for sharing! I wish more people were transparent about money (to know what's possible). In my example, I created Video Hub App that sells for $5 (and $3.50 goes to a cost-effective charity). I'm averaging about $500 for over a year now (with almost $15,000 donated to charity). https://videohubapp.com/ & https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App (MIT open source). - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Show HN: Automedia – a tool for managing bitrot and formats in media libraries
Awesome tool! Thank you :) May be a nice complement to my Video Hub App - browse, search, preview, and organize videos on Win, Mac, and Linux. https://videohubapp.com/ & https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App. - Source: Hacker News / almost 2 years ago
  • Tauri – Electron alternative written in Rust
I chose Electron for the app I was building because it would make sure the app I create (1 code base with Angular) would perform exactly the same way on Mac, Windows, and Linux. It required virtually no learning of anything new (just look up some Electron API like "minimize window") and I was done. https://videohubapp.com/ & https://github.com/whyboris/Video-Hub-App As a single developer, I was able to get... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • Marketing Is Scary for a Solo Developer
Marketing is hard. I have a personal charityware project Video Hub App that I've tried to promote. The most sensible place seems like Reddit, but even when posting to a fitting subreddit, my posts sometimes get taken down because you're not allowed to "self promote". Which means there is almost no avenue I can find. I had success with my first post of the app on HN, but it feels rude to re-post it to HN... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • TreeSize Free - Extremely fast and portable Harddrive Scanning to find what takes up space
This is a bit of a tangent perhaps, but for video organization you could try Video Hub App - software I wrote: https://videohubapp.com/ - it also has functionality to find duplicate videos. Source: over 2 years ago
  • Ask HN: What cool stuff do you run free-tier?
My commercial project Video Hub App is nearly free: https://videohubapp.com/ It's a Gatsby website and I used to use Vercel with their free deployments, but because I also needed a subdomain with PHP I switched to my cheap $3/month (unlimited website) webhost to serve the static files; but I also use Cloudflare for their free CDN. And the app demos are hosted on GitHub through Releases.... - Source: Hacker News / over 2 years ago
  • When will FFmpeg support reading and writing jxl?
Thank you for the answer. This is precisely my use case: I am using FFmpeg in my software to generate screenshots from videos. Source: over 2 years ago
  • FFmpeg 4.4
Huge thank you to FFmpeg -- it's the core of my app's functionality: extract screenshots and show them to users in a neat gallery. Specifically - it can with 1 command line argument grab a dozen or two (user choice) screenshots at even intervals (my choice) and stitch them together into one long horizontal jpg file (adding black bars if ratio isn't what I want). AMAZING! Video Hub App -... - Source: Hacker News / about 3 years ago
