Go to rent.com, trulia.com, and try to rent from a person who owns their apartment/condo vs. Renting from a management company. The owner may use rental management, but they are the ones to call the shots and ultimately make final decisions. Since you're new to the area, renting an apt would be a good first start. You probably know all the websites for searching- apartments.com, apartmentfinder.com, apartmentguide.com, rent.com, but avoid craigslist, facebook- lots of sketchy landlords. I'm an incoming PhD student, and I'm way behind on getting housing for the fall.
