Since you're new to the area, renting an apt would be a good first start. You probably know all the websites for searching- apartments.com, apartmentfinder.com, apartmentguide.com, rent.com, but avoid craigslist, facebook- lots of sketchy landlords. I'm an incoming PhD student, and I'm way behind on getting housing for the fall. I've called practically every complex within a thirty minute walk of campus, and studios and one bedrooms are pretty much all full unless you've got 3k a month for housing. Start by looking on loopnet.com to see what commercial spaces in your area are going for. Remember, when looking at rent costs, there is often something called triple net (or NNN) which covers variable expenses for the landlord and can add another $1-2/sf/mo to your cost.
