You get scans of your checks and then deposit them electronically. US banks require you to sign the back of the check, too, but you can Photoshop that once and then reuse it for every deposit.   Definitely Canada, US, and Mexico, at least. I’m guessing they are feigning ignorance about the precise letter of US tax law and hoping employees play along: assuming taxes get taken from your W2 regardless, the IRS will be happy and leave them alone and therefore you, too.
