I believe you are referring to main.js file. The answer is no. I used parse server for backend. And by default all classes are public which means everyone can read every data. There is a preferred way to prevent this. You disable all class level permissions for every class. Then you put your app logic to cloud code which is main.js file you were looking at. Actually SimpleNote does have an API: https://simperium.com/ It's what all the 3rd party SimpleNote apps use. However, they stopped accepting applications for the SimpleNote API key. Compare documentation from [2018] and [now]. You can still find the API key in the source code of other projects like [1]. I think the same API was given out to all 3rd party apps.
