We're commonly doing this with logging, using services such as Loggly or DataDog. We're using managed databases, be it on AWS, Heroku or database-vendor-specific solutions. This, essentially, is how you will find every single environment, in my experience. The first thing I would do is use something like device42.com to discover my environment. They have a free trial, and the license cost for 1-100 servers is only $1500. That (or any similar tool) will give you a baseline of what you're working with in a centralized database.
