To keep its patients’ and therapists’ sessions and personal information private and secure, Amwell says it uses an advanced encryption standard—the same standard the US military uses to lock down its data. We like the fact that several independent organizations vouch for Amwell’s security, too: Amwell is one of a handful of online therapy platforms that are accredited by the American Telemedicine Association, and it also has a certificate from the HiTrust Alliance, an independent organization that evaluates data security.

MDLIVE

If Amwell doesn’t work for you, look for an online therapist through MDLive. On a per-session basis, the services are similarly priced. With a self-reported 400 licensed mental health professionals in its system, MDLive has fewer therapists than Amwell but approximately double the number of therapists on the Doctor On Demand platform. Like Amwell, MDLive is accredited by the American Telemedicine Association and has a certificate from the HiTrust Alliance.

Doctor On Demand

Doctor On Demand, too, is accredited by the American Telemedicine Association, and its therapist roster is filled only with psychologists (Amwell and MDLive both employ psychologists as well as other mental health professionals). But at $180 per 50-minute session, it’s the priciest service we tested (though like our other picks, Doctor On Demand accepts insurance). The site also offers fewer therapist choices than Amwell and MDLive, it uses your computer’s location to determine therapist availability (thus limiting scheduling options), and the platform lacks the ability to hide your view of your own face on screen.

Psychologists are unable to prescribe medication. For prescription meds, you need to connect with a healthcare provider capable of prescribing medication, such as a psychiatrist. Since psychiatrists tend not to provide therapy, most healthcare professionals suggest seeing both a psychiatrist and a psychologist if you (or your therapist) think you might benefit from medication, ideally ones who work together and can share notes about your progress. Amwell, MDLive, and Doctor On Demand all offer a separate, more expensive option for individuals who wish to see psychiatrists (and potentially have medication prescribed or managed), whereas neither BetterHelp nor Talkspace has a separate option to specifically see a psychiatrist.

You don’t have the same autonomy in choosing your Talkspace therapist as you do with our picks. Instead, you get a roulette wheel of three options whom you can cycle through until you find someone who works for you. If you don’t click with your first therapist, it’s easy enough to switch around until you find someone you like. Talkspace therapists are expected to respond to a client’s unlimited messages a couple of times a day. Video chat is available only on mobile devices, limiting your screen size.

Reflect

We considered, and then eliminated, platforms that offered only text-based therapy (most often, on a subscription plan). These included text-only services from eTherapyPro, Online-Therapy.com, and Reflect. There’s not enough evidence to support the idea that text-based therapy will work for most people, and these services are not a good option for folks with a severe diagnosis. If you do decide to try text-based therapy, we recommend choosing a platform that has an option for video too.
