    Just to add some more context to the other great answers here: In the old days, before the Cloud blurred everything, companies used physical servers connected by wires to provide services like email, ftp access, web sites, and so on. A company would have a domain name for their entire organization. They would use subdomains to be able to route services to particular servers (or groups of servers acting as though they were a single server/service). 'mail.company.com' would be configured in DNS to point to the IP address of the server that would handle email. 'www.company.com' would have the IP address of the web server. A 'default' IP address could be configured for the domain name (company.com).

    Never thought about this and always used example.com in tests, including emails. Always seemed fine and the server rejections (I forgot the server code response code) seemed fine. I wonder if example.org returns the same.
