What is the best option to start if you want to make an isometric RPG from scratch? (not for selling, just as a hobby)

  1. Buy a bundle of games, you decide the price, and support charity in the process.
    For assets, you could check itch.io but you may struggle to find a complete set in the style you like or have difficulty taking multiple assets from different creators and achieving a consistent or unified look. Godot's biggest weakness is probably the lack of any formal asset marketplace in engine. But you can import and use a huge variety of assets in standard file formats from any source. Humblebundle sometimes has game asset collections available, but usually only for a month and then they're gone. Or you can really dive in to the experience and make programmer art like the rest of us in paint or whatever and just hope one day you'll get an artist to make your precious creation actually look decent.

    Godot is probably as simple as it gets while letting you create exactly what you want. There are plenty of tutorials for making isometric games, even in 3d (though 2d is much simpler and true to what you want). GDscript is the built-in language and it's a very gentle learning curve. There's visual scripting in 3.x versions but it's being removed entirely in 4.0 because it doesn't get used because it's not very good because it doesn't get used because....
