Roll20 Tableplop Foundry Virtual Tabletop
  1. 1
Roll20 is a suite of easy-to-use digital tools that expand pen-and-paper gameplay.

The biggest one is Roll20. It's free to use, though there is a paid tier with extra features. I'm not a particular fan of it personally, but it gets the job down. It's cloud hosted, meaning anyone can log in at any time.

  2. Tableplop is an easy to learn, fun to use virtual tabletop for role playing games. It includes everything you need to play TTRPGs remote apart from audio chat and works great on mobiles and computers.
TablePlop is lesser known but not bad. It's cloud hosted, has a free base tier of service, but you can pledge through Patreon to get more storage space plus some extra features.

  3. A self-hosted, modern, and developer-friendly roleplaying platform.

Foundry VTT is very capable. It's not free, but it's a one-time purchase rather than an ongoing subscription like the others. It does not come with hosting. You run a program on your own PC that people then connect to. Alternatively, you can set up a server version that can be connected to at any time, but doing so can be quite complex and requires that you either have a server in the cloud somewhere, or else that you have a spare machine you can use as a server on your home Internet connection.
